MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Despite a 10-5 shots-on-goal advantage and a glorious corner-kick attempt in the waning minutes of the second overtime, the University of Michigan women's soccer team left Minnesota with one point in a 0-0 tie Friday night (Oct. 20) at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa) led the Wolverines with five shots, including three on net, and Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic) stopped five shots for her sixth shutout of the season, leaving the keeper one shy of her single-season career high of seven.
Michigan got the offense going early, ripping three shots on goal and earning two corner kicks in the first 12 minutes. Coffman earned U-M's first shot of the game, but her attempt on net was turned aside by Gopher goalkeeper Lindsey Dare. Kylie Neschke (Still River, Mass./Tabor Academy) and Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) produced two consecutive shots in the 11th and 12th minutes that Dare, once again, blocked away.
Tuura stayed with Dare step-for-step all night, stopping two Minnesota on-goal chances in the 32nd and 42nd minutes. Carrying a 9-7 shot advantage, the Wolverines once again had to settle for a stalemate at the end of the first, marking the 10th time this season U-M has entered halftime in a scoreless tie.
On a Gopher corner kick in the 49th minute, Tuura came up with another solid stop as she knocked away a header attempt. Michigan's first scoring chance of the second half came in the 63rd minute, as Coffman opened up space with the dribble and rocketed one off the post from just beyond the 18-yard box. Michigan kept the pressure on, forcing Dare to make four more stops in regulation, including an Emily Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) shot from inside 15 yards. Tuura kept focused, making her second save of the half with under five minutes to play, and the two teams entered overtime in a 0-0 deadlock.
Turra was tested early, coming up with a big stop four minutes into extra time. Michigan responded on the counterattack as Neschke raced through the midfield and fired a shot that Dare got a hand on. Neither team created anymore offense for the remainder of the first overtime, and the game went into a second extra session.
The Wolverines defended an early Minnesota corner, coming back with two corner kicks of their own. On the second opportunity, Dobbyn lofted the cross to Sarah Banco (Medfield, Mass./Noble and Greenough School), who sent a header wide of the net. The final minutes wound down, and Michigan had to settle for its third 0-0 draw of the season.
The Maize and Blue return to the field Sunday, traveling to Ohio State for a 1 p.m. match at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On tonight's game ... "In the first half, we created some good opportunities and took it to them. In the second half, the momentum changed a bit and Minnesota played better. It was a pretty hard fought game. We had some good chances in the second and Megan (Tuura) made a couple nice saves. Minnesota is playing to get a spot in the tournament and we had our chances. They had a good goalkeeper, who made some nice saves."
On the play of senior goalkeeper Megan Tuura ... "Megan had a save on a head ball on a corner that was such a great save. Minnesota had some corners that were pretty dangerous and she held onto a bunch of balls. She was just phenomenal on all of their corners."
On Sunday's game at Ohio State ... "We need to be ready for one of the toughest games of the season. It is going to be a battle and they are an excellent team. We are going to need to have some good performances."
