ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team dominated every aspect of the game in a 10-2 exhibition win over the Waterloo Warriors on Friday (Oct. 6) in Yost Ice Arena.
Jack Johnson (Ann Arbor, Mich.) lit up the scoreboard, accumulating two goals and four assists on the night, while T.J. Hensick (Howell, Mich.) tallied five helpers and a goal. Billy Sauer (Walworth, N.Y.) was dominant in goal, stopping all 21 shots he faced in 40 minutes of action. U-M's power play converted five of its nine chances.
An early penalty in the opening frame led to Michigan's first goal of the night at 1:26. Hensick's initial shot from the left faceoff circle was stopped by Curtis Darling, but the big rebound was corralled next to the net by Travis Turnbull (Chesterfield, Mo.). Turnbull attempted a wraparound shot but was denied again by the Waterloo netminder. Kevin Porter (Northville, Mich.), waiting in the slot, gobbled up the second rebound. Porter's wrister bounced off the goalie's pads and trickled into the net for the power-play tally and the 1-0 lead.
The Wolverines added to their lead just 3:18 later on Porter's second tally of the night. Jason Bailey (Nepean, Ontario) relayed the puck from his own zone up to Hensick streaking up the right-side boards. Hensick's pass slid through two defenders to Porter, who snapped a quick shot that beat Darling glove-side for the 2-0 lead.
The Maize and Blue again capitalized on the man advantage with one second remaining in the period to go up 3-0. Matt Hunwick's (Sterling Heights, Mich.) cross-ice pass was received by Johnson and rifled in on Darling. Chad Kolarik (Abington, Pa.), stationed just outside of the crease, scooped up the puck and deposited it behind Darling to light the lamp as time expired.
Despite outscoring the Warriors by a trio of goals, U-M only outshot its opponent by a single shot in the first period, 12-11.
Michigan continued to dominate on the scoreboard when its third power-play goal of the game found the back of the net. The Johnson-Hunwick duo teamed up again, but it was Hunwick's shot that was blocked away by Waterloo's goalie in the middle frame. The puck dribbled out to Kolarik, who took a sharp-angle shot that went over Darling's glove at 5:14. The power-play marker, Kolarik's second of the night, gave U-M the 4-0 advantage.
Sauer continued to stonewall the Warriors, despite being shorthanded for a majority of the second period.
A botched clearing attempt caused another goal for the Maize and Blue and put the team up 5-0. Hunwick slid the puck to Johnson just inside the zone. The blueliner roped a pass to Brian Lebler (Penticton, B.C.), whose shot was deflected into the air in front of the net. A Warrior defenseman batted at the puck but muffed the clearing attempt and knocked it into his own goal. Lebler was credited with the goal at 14:31 of the second session.
The Wolverines padded their advantage with a Bailey marker at 17:11. Porter skated the puck into the zone and sent a no-look pass across the mouth of the goal to Bailey, who slammed the puck home to extend the lead to 6-0. Hensick assisted on the play.
Michigan continued to excel with the power play, capitalizing on a two-man advantage with 21 seconds left on the clock. Hensick picked up a Hunwick pass behind the Waterloo net and relayed it to Johnson in the slot. Johnson's one-timer proved too quick for Darling, giving U-M a seven-goal lead going into the final period.
Steve Jakiel (Santa Clarita, Calif.) took his turn in the net for the Maize and Blue, replacing Sauer for the third period.
Darling's woes continued in the final frame when he allowed Michigan to extend its lead at 5:24. Bailey propelled the puck to Hensick, who scooped up the puck and found Tim Cook (Montclair, N.J.) in the slot. Cook's slap shot beat Darling for Michigan's eighth marker of the night.
On the power play, Waterloo finally broke onto the scoreboard with 9:32 left in the game. Mike Della Mora took a pass from Shane Hart and passed it back to his linemate waiting at the goal mouth. The slow roller from Hart fooled Jakiel to make the score 8-1 in favor of U-M.
Michigan went end to end when Andrew Cogliano (Woodbridge, Ontario) forced a turnover in his own zone. Cogliano took the puck up the boards before relaying it past the lone defender to Johnson stationed just outside the Waterloo end of the ice. Johnson carried the puck in alone with only Darling to beat. The hard wrister squeaked through the Warrior netminder's five hole at 13:46 to give the Wolverines the 9-1 lead.
After tallying five helpers for the Maize and Blue, Hensick was finally able to knock home a goal of his own at 15:30. Porter grabbed a rebound from along the boards and moved it across the pond to Johnson on the right side. Johnson slid a pass through traffic to Hensick at the goal line, and he bounced the puck off Darling to make the score 10-1.
The combination of Della Mora and Hart struck again for Waterloo at 16:53 of the third period. Off a faceoff in the Michigan zone, Hart tipped the puck to Della Mora near the right faceoff dot. Della Mora returned the puck to the Warrior center, who sent a quick shot over Mike Mayhew's (Owatonna, Minn.) outstretched glove.
Waterloo continued to challenge Mayhew as time expired, but the senior goalie stifled its last-ditch efforts. Michigan outshot the Warriors 41-34.
The Wolverines will finish out their exhibition schedule on Sunday (Oct. 8) when they face off against the U.S. National Team Development Prorgram Under-18 team. The puck will drop at 5 p.m.
