Michigan Receives At-Large Bid To NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The third-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team is headed to the NCAA Championships after receiving an at-large bid. The Wolverines were among 13 at-large team selections announced Sunday evening (Nov. 12) by the NCAA, and U-M is one of six Big Ten Conference schools that will represent the league at the national meet.
The NCAA Championships will be held Monday, Nov. 20, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind., with Indiana State University serving as the host. The 6,000-meter women's race is scheduled for Noon, following the 1:15 p.m. men's competition.
The other at-large team selections include Arizona State, Brigham Young, Colorado State, Florida State, Iowa, North Caroline, Providence, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forrest and Weber State.
The top two teams in each of the nine regional meets automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships. Automatic qualifiers include Arkansas, Baylor, Boston College, Colorado, Duke, Florida, Georgetown, Georgia, Illinois, Iona, Michigan State, Minnesota, North Carolina State, Princeton, Stanford, Texas Tech., UC Santa Barbara and Wisconsin.
The Wolverines are coming off a performance at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Saturday (Nov. 11) where they were led by individual regional champion junior/sophomore Nicole Edwards (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey). U-M put all of its scorers in the top 28 spots and finished third as a team at Forrest Creason Golf Course in Bowling Green, Ohio.
Michigan will be seeking its fourth straight top-six team finish at the NCAA Championships, and its first NCAA team championship. The Wolverines placed sixth overall as a team in the last two seasons.
