Roy, Maktabi Headline U-M Performance at MSU Open

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Competing unattached in its final preseason tuneup prior to the official start of the 2006-07 season, the University of Michigan wrestling team registered a solid showing at the Michigan State Open on Sunday (Nov. 12) at Jenison Field House. The Wolverines had a pair of placewinners against the field of more than 360 individual wrestlers from 21 schools, including Big Ten Conference rivals Indiana, Ohio State, Michigan State, Penn State and Purdue.
Fifth-year senior Nick Roy (Wall, N.J./Wall HS) turned in the top U-M performance of the weekend, claiming runner-up honors in his 197-pound debut with a 4-1 record. Roy cruised through the preliminary competition before falling just short of the individual title with a 5-2 loss to top-seeded J.D. Bergman of Ohio State. The performance marked Roy's best career performance at the annual MSU tournament.
Senior/junior Omar Maktabi (Iowa City, Iowa/West HS) rallied after suffering a narrow 2-1 overtime loss in the opening round, securing seventh-place honors at heavyweight with a 4-2 mark. It was Maktabi's third top-eight finish in six career open-tournament appearances.
Michigan will kick off the season on Thursday (Nov. 16) in its annual non-conference dual against Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa. The meet is slated for a 7 p.m. start at Leeman-Turner Arena.
