ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team captured the 2006 Big Ten Conference Singles Championship title Monday afternoon (Nov. 13) at U-M's Varsity Tennis Center. Maravic won six straight matches in the 64-player main draw to claim Michigan's first conference singles championship since 1996.
The championship match against Indiana's David Bubenicek saw the 25th-ranked Maravic earn a late break to earn the first set by a 6-3 margin, then post back-to-back breaks in the middle of the second set to win by a score of 6-2 and secure Michigan's 21st Big Ten singles title in the 114-year history of the program.
The second-seeded Maravic handily defeated Indiana's Dara McLoughlin by a score of 6-1, 6-2 in the morning's semifinal match to earn a berth in the championship.
Maravic's six victories on the weekend, which all came in straight sets, moved his fall record to an impressive 9-2. He enters the dual match season with a career singles record of 47-35.
The Wolverines' last Big Ten singles champion was Peter Pusztai (1993-96), who captured the title as a senior in 1996.
The Big Ten Singles Championship marked Michigan's final event of the fall season. The Wolverines open 2007 by traveling to Coral Gables, Fla., to compete in the Miami Invitational on Jan. 13-15.
