ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's golf coach Kathy Teichert announced today (Nov. 16) the signing of Louisa Shu (West Bloomfield, Mich./Birmingham Seaholm) and Min Yean Tan (Queensland, Australia/Hills International College) to National Letters of Intent for the 2007-08 academic year.
"We are extremely excited about adding Louisa and Min Yean to the Michigan women's golf program," said Teichert. "Both bring a wealth of experience and are exceptional students off the golf course. We really look forward to them arriving in the fall and working with them."
Shu, a 2006 MIGCA Super Team member, helped Birmingham Seaholm to the 2006 Division II State Championship title, after back-to-back runner-up finishes in 2004 and 2005. In the state finals, she earned individual finishes of fifth (2006), sixth (2005) and tied for 11th (2004). Shu is a three-time member of the MIGCA Division II All Academic Team (2004, '05, '06) and is a Division II All-State Team selection (2005) and an honorable mention selection (2004).
In addition to her state final accomplishments and accolades, Shu led Seaholm to three straight regional team titles (2004, '05, '06), finishing as the individual medalist runner-up each of those year. She also led Seaholm to three straight conference championship team titles (2004, '05, '06), and has been recognized as a first team All-Conference selection three times (2004, '05, '06). The 2006 Seaholm Team captain, she is a three-time recipient of the team's Most Valuable Player award (2004, '05, '06).
"Louisa is just such a quality fit to our program," said Teichert. "She has continued to improve and has elevated her game to a much higher level over the last year and a half. Her efforts have helped make her the No. 1 ranked player in the state of Michigan and that says a lot about how far she has come. One of our primary recruiting goals is to keep the top players in Michigan here and we are just elated she will be joining us. We feel she can come in and help this program right away."
Born in Penang Island, Malaysia, Tan attended the Methodist Girls' School through ninth grade before moving to Queensland, Australia, where she is completing her prep career at the Hills International College. While in Malaysia, Tan was a two-time recipient of the Sportsgirl Award (2003, '04) as well as a two-time recipient of the Excellence in Sports Award for Golf (2003, '04). In Australia, she was a Sports House Captain and the recipient of the 2006 Gold Medal Award for Academic Excellence.
Tan's golfing accolades are highlighted by a medalist runner-up finish at the 2006 Queensland Ladies State Open Championship, a third-place finish at the 2005 Sunshine Coast Ladies Open Amateur Championship (69-81/150), and a fourth place finish at the 2005 Queensland State Schoolgirls Championship (79-75-81-75/310). In 2004, she highlighted the year with medalist honors at the Penang State Ladies Amateur Open (80-76/156), the Sarawak Junior World Masters (77-76-73-78/304) and the Malaysian Schools National Championship (84-75/159). Tan also tied for third at the 2004 Greg Norman International Junior Masters (81-72-80-79/312) and was sixth at the Malaysian Ladies Amateur Open (79-76-77/232), helping her team to a second-place finish.
"We found out about Min Yean and have been in contact with her over the last couple of years. When I saw her play at the Junior World Tournament, I knew she would be a great fit for Michigan," said Teichert. "She has exceptional fundamentals, a great golf swing and an extraordinary feel and touch around the greens. Like, Louisa, we are just so excited about her arrival and really feel she can have an impact right away-."
The Wolverines will lose two players from their 2006-07 roster, as seniors Brianna Broderick and Ali Stinson will exhaust their eligibility.
