Event Recap| Boxscore
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 9 Penn State on the road Sunday afternoon (Sept. 24) at Jeffrey Field. Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa) scored the lone goal for the Wolverines, who lost for the third straight game. Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) made a career-high six saves in a losing cause.
Penn State started the scoring when Aubrey Aden-Buie put in a rebound off a previous Gates stop to give the Lions a 1-0 lead at 37:41. Michigan's best chance of the half came on its lone corner kick in the 32nd minute, but U-M could not convert and went into the half down a goal.
The Nittany Lions opened the second half with seven straight shots and two corners before finally adding to the lead on a cross from right to left to Sarah Dwyer to give PSU a 2-0 lead at 56:13. Gates made two saves before the score.
Michigan cut the lead in half when Coffman snuck a rebound into the net five minutes later at 61:00 to move the score to 2-1 and give the Wolverines some hope. That hope dwindled, however, as Penn State scored twice in the final 15 minutes of play and went on to a 4-1 win. The Lions' goals came at 77:17 by Allie Long on a one-on-one breakaway as the Wolverines committed players offensively and at 86:18 on Aden-Buie's second goal, which came off a cross.
Penn State outshot Michigan 19-7 and owned a 7-3 corner advantage over the Wolverines in the contest.
Michigan returns home to host No. 25-ranked Purdue on Friday night (Sept. 29, 7 p.m.) at the U-M Soccer Field.
