Michigan Head Coach Cheryl Burnett
On tonight's game ... "St. Bonaventure would get in a five-out spread. They tried to isolate and dribble penetrate certain people or match-ups. We were very well prepared for what they were going to do. We talked to our players about who their shooters were and who their drivers were. We consistently let them drive to the rim all night. St. Bonaventure did a great job of making the next pass. Katelyn Murray hit a couple of big shots down the stretch. We got a lead in the first half and I thought we were playing pretty well, but we let them storm back. We talked to our team about making the on-court adjustments. St. Bonaventure started doubling the first-side post and it took us awhile to adjust to that. We got some pretty good looks throughout the game, but we missed a lot of layups. We didn't offensively rebound the entire night. Our players were mentally ready to play. This is a tough loss."
On the keys to the game ... "I thought we started the game very lively and very sharp. St. Bonaventure took away our inside game and our post. They played soft on the basketball; we call it a 'sagging man'. It forces you to read the defense. You have to curl off of the screens and move the basketball from side to side. We went through a stretch after we got the lead where we didn't reverse the ball at all. We just put up some pretty quick shots for about seven or eight possessions. That created the change in the game. St. Bonaventure did a good job of hitting the big shots and isolating us. We gave up dribble penetrations when we went to our zone, which is something we can't have happen. We gave up too many dribble drives and we didn't offensively rebound. Part of that is due to the fact that we didn't reverse the basketball and break them down in their sagging man. We didn't make adjustments on the court with personnel like we would have liked to. Lastly, we missed some really easy shots. I thought we played the end of the game brilliantly in terms of how we wanted to play coming out of timeouts and who we wanted to get to the free throw line. The fact of the matter was that we couldn't score out of too many of those possessions. Three of those were layups. We had to get those to get back into the game."
