ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan men's track and field team hosted its final regular-season meet of the indoor season with the Harold Silverston Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 18) at the U-M Indoor Track Building. The Wolverines earned a trio of individual victories as the team focused its preparation for the postseason.
Freshman Adam Harris (Wheaton, Ill./North HS) and sophomore/freshman Morgan Trent (Brighton, Mich./Orchard Lake St. Mary's) headlined the Wolverines' performance, each claiming his first collegiate victory and adding another runner-up finish in the sprint events. Harris smashed his best collegiate time in the 60-meter dash, clocking 6.86 to better his season mark in the event by 0.14 seconds. Trent, competing his first short-sprint event this season, finished just a step behind in 6.89. The pair traded places in the 200-meter event with Trent claiming the win with a time of 21.92 and Harris earning runner-up honors with a season-best 22.13.
Turning in his best 800-meter run showing of the season, junior captain John D'Arcy (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont HS) claimed his second individual win over a three-week span, registering a time of 1:54.93 to improve his previous mark by 0.15 seconds.
Three personal-best performances made for a strong day by the Wolverine field-event competitors as senior captain Brad Miller (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion HS), senior Spencer Dowdall (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs HS) and senior/junior Paul Sarantos (Portage, Mich./Northern HS) all showed steady improvement in the final push to the conference meet. Miller cleared 6-11 1/2 to take second place in the high jump, adding a half inch to the previous mark he had posted on two occasions, including last week at the Sykes-Sabok Challenge Cup (Feb. 10-11).
Dowdall, who has consistently improved on his best pole vault clearances all season, registered a personal-best 15-8 1/4 to claim second place in the event. The mark added a full inch to Dowdall's previous best, which he recorded two years ago at the EMU Twilight meet. Senior Kevin Peterman (Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS) also posted a clearance of 15-8 1/4 -- a season best -- in third place.
Sarantos tacked a half inch to his personal-best mark in the shot put, recording 53-3 to finish fifth in the event. Freshman Sean Pruitt (Cato, Wis./Valders HS) threw a distance of 54-0 1/2 to finish just ahead of his Wolverine teammate, in fourth place.
The Wolverines will kick off postseason competition next weekend when they travel to Iowa City, Iowa, for the 2006 Big Ten Men's Indoor Championships.
