Signorelli Paces Wolverines on First Day at Winter Cup

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Senior Gerry Signorelli (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mitchell HS) led the University of Michigan men's gymnatsics team's contingent of five competitors at the Winter Cup on Thursday (Feb. 2) by placing sixth in the all-around in the evening session with a score of 84.80. His best individual event placing came on the high bar, where he placed third with a score of 14.950.

The newly instituted International Federation of Gymnastics (FIG) scoring rules were used at this meet. The new scoring system, which will be used at all elite level meets, incorporates credit for the routine's content, difficulty and execution. A gymnast's score is no longer limited to a maximum of 10.0. The new scoring system is available at the USA Gymnastics site.

In the first of the two sessions, freshman Ralph Rosso (Morganville, N.J./ St. John Vianney HS) notched the Wolverines' highest all-around finish by placing 13th with an 80.35. Following Rosso was senior floor exercise and vault specialist Luke Bottke (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS), who scored a 14.60 on floor for seventh place and a 16.00 on vault for third place, the highest individual event placing for any Wolverine. Former Wolverine Geoff Corrigan placed fourth in the all-around with a score of 82.25.

The second session saw Signorelli lead the way with his sixth-place effort, followed by freshman Joe Catrambone (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic HS) in 16th with an 81.10 and junior Aaron Rakes (Lexington, Ky./Dunbar HS) in 17th with an 80.80. Junior Andrew Elkind (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East), who competed only five events (no floor) placed 33rd with a 52.80. Elkind's highest event placing came on the rings, where he placed 11th with a 14.00.

The top 42 gymnasts from both sessions combined will advance to the final round of competition to be held Saturday (Feb. 4) at 6:30 p.m. PST. Michigan gymnasts who will be advancing are Signorelli, Catrambone and Bottke.  Complete results are available at the Winter Cup site.
