LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Junior Lorilyn Wilson (Salem, Ore./Sprague) threw her first no-hitter in a 3-0 win over No. 20 Louisville, and the University of Michigan erased a two-run deficit in the second game of the afternoon in a 4-2 win over Middle Tennessee State Saturday (March 25) in college softball action at the Louisville Classic.
Wilson (5-4) missed recording the fourth perfect game in U-M softball history due to a two-out walk in the bottom of the seventh inning, but she retired the next batter on a liner to rightfield. Senior Grace Leutele (Sierra Vista, Ariz./Buena) had a hand in all three runs. In the second inning she singled in U-M's first run and later scored on a single by freshman Teddi Ewing (Olathe, Kan./Olathe East), and Leutele hit a solo homer in the sixth.
In the second game of the afternoon against Middle Tennessee State, starting senior Jennie Ritter (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) gave up a two-run homer in the first inning, but senior Becky Marx's (St. Joseph, Mich./Lakeshore) game-winning double in the fifth inning scored a pair of runs to give the Wolverines a 4-2 victory.
Wilson struck out nine batters for her third shutout of the season. Her no-hitter is the 25th in U-M softball history and the first since Ritter no-hit Indiana on April 7, 2005.
In the second, Marx led off with a walk and freshman Allison Kidman (Clearwater, Fla./Countryside) replaced her on first as a pinch-runner. Senior Stephanie Bercaw (Wooster, Ohio/Hillsdale) sacrificed Kidman to second, and Leutele brought her home with an RBI single to center, making it 1-0. Senior Rebekah Milian (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) singled and the runners advanced on sophomore Michelle Weatherdon (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) groundout, putting Milian on second and Leutele on third with two out. Ewing singled to leftfield, scoring Leutele, but was gunned down trying to stretch it into a double and the inning ended with U-M up 2-0.
Leutele's sixth-inning bomb, her fourth of the season, came with two out and put Michigan up 3-0. The home run also tied Leutele for second place on Michigan's career home runs list with 28, equaling Melissa Gentile's career total.
In the second game of the afternoon, Middle Tennessee struck first when Ritter (9-4) hit Blue Raider batter Katie Mielke in the first inning and with two outs Muriel Ledbetter hit her sixth home run of the season to give the Blue Raiders an early 2-0 lead.
Michigan promptly tied the game in the bottom half of the first when senior Tiffany Haas (North Tustin, Calif/Foothill) led off with a double and sophomore Alessandra Giampaolo (Pasadena, Calif./Polytechnic) moved her to third with a single. Sophomore Samantha Findlay (Lockport, Ill./Lockport East) singled in the next at-bat to score Haas, and Leutele singled in Findlay later in the inning to knot the contest at 2-2.
U-M broke the deadlock in the fifth. Haas laced a one-out double to center followed by a walk for Giampaolo to put runners on first and second. After a strikeout, Marx doubled in Haas and Giampaolo to give the Wolverines a 4-2 advantage.
Ritter snuffed out a promising Blue Raider rally in the seventh. After Middle Tennessee put runners on the corners with one out, Ritter struck out the final two batters for the complete-game win.
Michigan wraps up play at the Louisville Classic on Sunday (March 26) with a noon game against Toledo.
