FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. -- Junior defenseman Tim Cook (Montclair, N.J.) of the University of Michigan ice hockey team was announced as U-M's representative on the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Scholar-Athlete Team on Tuesday (March 7). Cook and the 11 other players from each respective CCHA squad are eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, which will be given out March 16 at the CCHA Awards.
Cook, who is majoring in history, was tabbed U-M's top scholar-athlete by head coach Red Berenson and the team's faculty athletic representative. The criterion for the honor is having a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 through the fall term of the selection year. The CCHA Scholar-Athlete of the Year is selected by the 12 faculty representatives, and voting is based on a system that awards five points for a first-place vote, three points for a second-place vote and one point for a third-place vote.
Cook has skated in 35 of 36 games for the Wolverines in 2005-06. The defensive-minded rearguard has a goal and two assists on the season. Cook was Academic All-Big Ten Conference in 2004-05, and he earned a U-M Athletic Academic Achievement award in both 2003-04 and 2004-05.
The No. 14-ranked Wolverines begin the CCHA playoff season this weekend (March 10-12) when they host Ferris State in a best-of-three quarterfinal-round series at Yost Ice Arena.
