Porter, Williams Hit NCAA Standards at Sun Angel Meet

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Junior Jeff Porter (Somerset, N.J./Franklin HS) and freshman Lex Williams (Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter HS) boasted NCAA regional-qualifying performances to lead the University of Michigan men's track and field team at the annual Sun Angel Classic on Saturday (April 15) at Arizona State's Sun Angel Stadium.
The qualifying effort was the third in as many appearances for Porter in the 110-meter hurdles this outdoor season. The Wolverine, who entered the weekend listed seventh on the NCAA Mideast Region performance list in the event, posted a time of 14.10 to claim fourth place in the second and faster heat and similarly take fourth among the 12-man final standings. He also posted a sixth-place run in the 100-meter dash behind a time of 10.77, the Wolverines' top clocking in the event this season.
Williams registered his first NCAA regional-qualifying run his collegiate career, clocking a personal-best 4:05.71 in a fourth-place mile performance. The U-M freshman trimmed 2.40 seconds from his previous mile best to just duck under the qualifying standard of 4:06.00. His time converts to 3:47.58 in the 1,500-meter run and gives the Wolverines their first NCAA Mideast Region qualifier in the event this season.
Junior Stann Waithe (Towson, Md./Loch Raven HS) turned in a pair of top-10 finishes in the sprint events, taking third place in the 200-meter run and eighth in the 400-meter competition. The Wolverine clocked 21.46 in the 200m to match his season-best time in the event and fall 0.27 seconds shy of the NCAA regional qualifier. Waithe also came up just short of the 400-meter qualifying standard, which he already achieved in his outdoor debut, posting a time of 47.66 to miss by 0.40 seconds.
The Wolverines will stay local on Saturday (April 22), heading across town to Ypsilanti, Mich., for the annual EMU Invitational at the Old-Marshall Track.
