U-M Wins at Purdue With Second Straight Clean Sweep

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The No. 35 University of Michigan men's tennis team improved to 5-1 in the Big Ten Conference with a 7-0 blanking of Purdue Saturday afternoon (April 8) at the Varsity Tennis Courts. The Wolverines (11-7, 5-1 Big Ten) claimed the doubles point for the fifth time in the last six matches before giving up just one set in their six singles victories. U-M has now won five of its last six matches.
Junior Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) and sophomore Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) won their fifth straight match at the No. 1 doubles position, handily defeating Colin Foster and Kurt Zaske by a score of 8-3 to improve to 14-4 in dual match play and 21-7 overall.
Junior Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) and freshman Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) clinched the doubles point for the Wolverines, as they beat Eric Hodgman and Kelubia Mabatah by an 8-3 margin at No. 2 to improve their dual match record to 10-6. Michigan's No. 1 and 2 doubles teams both hold 5-1 records in Big Ten action this season.
Teaming together for the first time in dual match play, freshmen Peter Aarts (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) and Scott Bruckmann (Sarasota, Fla./Saint Stephens Episcopal School) posted an 8-5 victory over Jose Fuenmayor and Scott Warner at No. 3 to complete the doubles sweep for the Wolverines.
Hung and Heller remained undefeated in singles since they switched positions in the lineup. Hung got things started with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Mabatah at No. 3, while Heller clinched the team victory and remained perfect in Big Ten play (6-0) with a 7-5, 6-4 decision over Warner at No. 2. Sandwiched in between Hung and Heller's wins was Maravic's 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Foster at the top spot.
Junior Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) gave Michigan a 5-0 advantage with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jarred Leibner at No. 5. Peretz holds a team-best 12-6 dual match record this season.
Aarts and Mazlin closed out the match with wins at Nos. 6 and 4, respectively. Aarts secured his fourth straight victory with a 6-2, 7-6(3) triumph over Griffin Nienberg at No. 6, while Mazlin tallied his team-leading 17th overall win with a 6-7(7), 7-5, 1-0(8) decision over Hodgman at No. 4.
The Wolverines will return to action tomorrow (Sunday, April 9) when they face No. 7 Illinois. The match is scheduled for a noon CDT start at the Atkins Tennis Center in Champaign, Ill.
