BRYAN, Texas -- Senior Amy Schmucker (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS) of the University of Michigan women's golf team continued her NCAA Central Regional at Texas A&M's Traditions Golf Club today (Friday, May 12) carding a second 82 putting herself in a tie for 68th with a 162 36-hole total. Schmucker is third among the three invited individuals as Illinois State's Samantha Richdale is tied for fourth with a 147 total (71-76) and Kansas' Amanda Costner is tied for 29th with a 154 total (78-76).
As Schmucker starter her second round off the No. 1 tee, she quickly opened with a par and went into the red as she birdied No. 2 to go one-under early. After an errand shot and difficult recovery, she posted a double-bogey on her third hole as she slipped to one-over par. A second double-bogey on No. 5 put her three-over par with four holes remaining on the front nine. After back-to-back pars, she closed her front side with a pair of bogeys as she made the turn at five-over.
Schmucker opened with another bogey to start the back nine before parring four of her next five holes, as a bogey on No. 14 was the only blemish during the stretch as she moved to seven-over with three holes to go. Unfortunately, she closed the round with three straight bogeys as she tallied a second round total of 82. Schmucker has not posted back-to-back rounds of 80-or-more in 22 tournaments.
Using a second round team total of 300, defending national championship and No. 1 ranked Duke took a three-shot lead after 36 holes with a 594 total. The Blue Devils (294-300) are ahead of Southern Cal (293-304), who is second at 597. Pepperdine (303-304) is third at 607. As far as the Big Ten, Northwestern (308-308) is sixth at 616, Michigan State (306-311) is seventh at 617, while Ohio State (309-325) fell out of the top eight and is 15th at 634. Individually, Duke's Amanda Blumenherst (70-75) and Southern Cal's Irene Cho (71-74) are both tied for the top spot with 145 36-hole totals. Duke's Elisabeth Janangelo is third at 146 (77-69).
The NCAA Central Regional concludes Saturday (May 18) with 18 holes beginning at 7:30 a.m. CDT. Schmucker will begin her second round with a 7:30 a.m. CDT start off No. 10. The top eight teams and the top two individuals not on a qualifying team will advance to the NCAA Championship May 23-26 in Columbus, Ohio.
