SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Junior Stann Waithe (Towson, Md./Loch Raven HS) kicked off the University of Michigan men's track and field team's participation at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday evening (June 7) as the Wolverine sprinter just missed qualification to the 400-meter semifinals after posting the 20th quickest time during the preliminary round at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium.
Making his second straight appearance at the national event, Waithe took the middle of the track in the fifth and final heat but could not keep pace with the leaders, registering a time of 46.70 to claim third place. With the top-two finishers in each section earning automatic advancement to the semifinal round, Waithe finished just a single position outside of the two guaranteed bids yet several meters back. Sixteen total competitors advanced to the semifinals, scheduled for Friday night.
Waithe wrapped up his outdoor campaign with a season-best time of 46.15 in the 400-meter dash, which he recorded at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships (May 12-14) en route to a third-place finish. The effort marked an 0.21-second improvement on his previous personal record and put him fourth on Michigan's all-time outdoor performance list in the long-sprint event, where he is tied with All-American Trinity Townsend, who clocked the same time in 1995.
The Wolverines will return to action tomorrow (Thursday, June 8) at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, Calif. Sophomore Mike Woods (Ottawa, Ontario/Hillcrest HS) will be Michigan's lone day-two competitor, slated to appear in the preliminaries of the 1,500-meter run at 6:15 p.m. PDT at Hornet Stadium.
