ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan ice hockey senior Andrew Ebbett (Vernon, B.C.) and senior softball All-American Becky Marx (St. Joseph, Mich./Lakeshore) have been named U-M's male and female Big Ten Conference Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners for 2005-06.
Ebbett and Marx were singled out from the list of 25 Wolverines -- one in each varsity sport -- recognized for sportsmanship during the course of the 2005-06 athletic year. The honor acknowledges those student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, they must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
Captain of the 2005-06 Michigan ice hockey team, Ebbett was a finalist for the CCHA Best Defensive Forward Award in his senior season and set offensive highs for goals (14) and points (42). The forward tallied 105 assists in his four-year career and moved into 14th place on U-M's all-time forward assists list, while his 166 games played tie him for eighth on U-M's all-time forward games played list. Ebbett also received both the Hal Downes Trophy as U-M's most valuable player and the Howard Colby Award for sportsmanship. He was named to the Academic All-Big Ten team in his sophomore and junior campaigns and is a three-time recipient of the U-M Athletic Academic Achievement Award.
A 2006 All-American and All-Big Ten second team honoree at catcher, Marx led the Wolverine bats with a team-best .327 batting average, 13 home runs, 49 RBI and a .626 slugging percentage. She hit the most single-season home runs for any catcher in U-M softball history and moved into a tie for 10th place on Michigan's all-time home runs list with 19 career dingers, despite just two seasons of competition with the Maize and Blue. Marx also caught 24 of Michigan's 27 shutouts and both of U-M's no-hitters in 2006. Off the field, Marx earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2006 and was a two-time recipient of the U-M Athletic Academic Achievement Award.
The conference office instituted the Big Ten Sportsmanship Awards in 2003. One member of each varsity sports team on every campus is nominated by the institution, two of whom are named as the Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners from each school annually.
