DALLAS, Texas -- University of Michigan senior left tackle Jake Long (Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer East HS) has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2006 Outland Trophy. Long is one of five Big Ten Conference players on the prestigious list, joining Ohio State's Kirk Barton and Quinn Pitcock, Penn State's Levi Brown and Wisconsin's Joe Thomas.
Long returns as a starter at offensive tackle for the 2006 season. After missing the first seven games of the 2005 regular season due to an injury during fall camp, Long returned to the lineup at Iowa and started the final four contests of the year. He was named 2004 freshman All-American and All-Big Ten second team. Long has started 14 of his 17 career games played.
The Outland Trophy has been awarded to the best offensive or defensive lineman in college football since 1946. The winner will be chosen by the FWAA's All-America Committee, which selects the association's 25-man team and picks three Outland Trophy finalists.
The Outland Trophy announcement will be made on Dec. 7 in Orlando, Fla., during the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show. The trophy presentation banquet, sponsored by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee and First Data Corporation, is scheduled for Jan. 11, 2007, in Omaha, Neb.
