ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan assistant men's swimming coach Dan Schinnerer was announced Monday (Aug. 14) as the Bucknell University head men's and women's swimming coach. He will assume his duties beginning Aug. 28. Schinnerer has been with the Wolverines since 2003-04 when he served as a volunteer assistant coach. He was promoted in spring 2004 to assistant coach, a position he held for two years.

"I am extremely excited to join the Bucknell community while at the same time sad to leave the University of Michigan behind," Schinnerer said. "This is a tremendous opportunity for me and my family though. Bucknell has a tradition of success, as well as a great deal of potential in its swimming and diving team.
"My experience at Michigan has been invaluable," he continued. "I have had the opportunity to work with Olympic level athletes and coaches. I am particularly indebted to (former U-M men's head coach) Jon Urbanchek, (former U-M associate head coach) Eric Namesnik and (U-M men's head coach) Bob Bowman for providing me such opportunities here at Michigan. I know my time in Ann Arbor will serve me well in the future, and Michigan will always have a special place in my heart."
As a volunteer coach, Schinnerer helped lead U-M to a fifth-place national finish in 2004, its best finish since 1996 when Michigan placed third. That was followed by the team's sixth-place NCAA finish in 2005 and an eighth-place showing in 2006. In his three years with the Maize and Blue, he helped lead U-M to seven NCAA event titles and 19 Big Ten titles.
"We are very excited for Dan as he enters the next phase of his coaching career," said Bowman. "This appointment is a great opportunity for him and his family. Dan has done an exceptional job here at Michigan, and I look forward to watching his teams at Bucknell progress in the coming years."
Prior to coming to Ann Arbor, Schinnerer taught history and coached swimming at The Peddie School in Highstown, N.J. He was a four-year letterman at Yale University, where he represented the Bulldogs at four consecutive Eastern Conference Championships. Schinnerer graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history (2001).
A native of Grand Rapids, Mich., Schinnerer and his wife, Lesia, are the parents of one son, Kase, who was born in July 2006.
