ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior-to-be Lindsay Davis (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) of the University of Michigan women's golf team highlighted the 2006 summer for the Maize and Blue as she won the 90th Michigan Women's Amateur Championship in mid-July at Barton Hills Country Club in Ann Arbor.
Davis opened her 2006 Michigan Amateur (July 10-14) posting rounds of 76 and 82 to put her in 11th place overall after stroke play, advancing her to match play. Her opening round against Donna Benford went the distance as the match posted the longest of any during the championship as Davis closed out Benford after 20 holes. In her second round against Laura Bavaird, Davis again battled back and forth through 18 holes as the match went to a 19th hole before she closed out Bavaird and advance to the quarterfinal.
With those two extra-hole matches under her belt, Davis advanced to the semifinals after a 3 and 2 win over Lindsay Dunigan. Davis took an early lead against Christina Cibrario in her semifinal match and won 5 and 4 to advance to the championship match against defending champion and current Michigan State Spartan Mandi McConnell.
In the championship, Davis took an early two-hole lead and never really looked back as she held off any of McConnell's comeback attempts to win the 90th Michigan Women's Amateur title 4 and 2. Davis becomes the fourth Wolverine to win the Michigan Amateur championship. She joins Elaine Crosby (1981), Erica Zonder (1991) and Kim Benedict (1999, 2001, '03) as Wolverines to win the title.
Other Wolverines at the Michigan Women's Amateur included: former Wolverine Kelly Easton (79-78/157), eliminated in second round of match play; Julie Inwood (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS) (79-76/155), eliminated in first round of match play and Rose Cassard (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids HS) (89-94/183), who did not advance to match play.
In addition to Davis highlighting the summer for the Maize and Blue, several Michigan golfers had success throughout the 2006 summer. Inwood opened the summer adding a medalist title to her resume after she won the Ann Arbor Women's City Championship (June 25) at Leslie Park with a 146 total (75-71).
After qualifying for their third straight U.S. Women's Amateur Championship both Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS) and former Wolverine Amy Schmucker failed to reach match play. Broderick tied for 160th with a 160 total (83-77), while Schmucker tied for 89th with a 156 total (78-78).
Despite not reaching match play at the U.S. Amateur, Schmucker found success in her home state of Minnesota as she won the 35th Minnesota Women's Amateur Championship (Aug. 14-16) at the Rochester Golf and Country Club in Rochester, Minn. She finished with a three-stroke win with a 225 total (71-78-76).
Isabelle Gendreau (St. Georges de Beauce, Quebec/Saint Andrew's School) highlighted her summer with a top 20 finish at the Royale Cup National Women's Amateur Championship (Aug. 1-4) at the Moncton Golf & Country Club in Riverview, New Brunswick. Gendreau tied for 19th after posting scores of 84-75-75-73 for a 307 total.
At the 2006 GAM Women's Championship (Aug. 15-16), incoming freshmen Andrea Ratigan (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino HS) and Ashley Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) led a Wolverine contingent as they finished among the top 10 individually. Ratigan tied for the medalist runner-up with a 151 total (74-77), while Bauer tied for eighth with a 154 total (75-79). Other Wolverines competing at the GAM Championship included: Davis, tied 17th (79-81/160); Inwood, 42nd (83-86/169) and Cassard, tied for 58th (86-96/182).
The Wolverines open their 2006-07 season with a trip to East Lansing, Mich., for the 2006 Lady Northern Invitational at Michigan State's Forest Akers West Course, Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 16-17). The tournament will be a preview for the 2007 Big Ten Championships, which will be Friday through Sunday (April 27-29).
