Harris Named to Butkus Award Watch List

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, Inc., has announced that University of Michigan fifth-year senior inside linebacker David Harris (Grand Rapids, Mich./Ottawa Hills HS) is one of 65 candidates for the 2006 Butkus Award. Presented to the nation's best collegiate linebacker, Harris is one of eight Big Ten Conference linebackers on the prestigious watch list.
Harris was named the Roger Zatkoff Award winner as Michigan's top linebacker after leading the team in tackles with a career-best 88 stops last season. He started the final 11 games of the season after missing the opener due to injury. Harris reached double digits in tackles twice in 2005, including a career-high 18 stops against Minnesota (Oct. 8).
A two-year letterman, Harris has made 12 starts at inside linebacker and played in 20 career games. He has recorded 100 tackles, seven tackles for loss, one sack, one fumble recovery and three pass breakups during his career.
The watch list will be paired to 10 semifinalists on Thursday, Oct. 19, and the three finalists will be announced on Thursday, Nov. 9. The 2006 winner will be announced on Saturday, Dec. 9, at the Butkus Award Gala in Orlando, Fla.
Erick Anderson is the only Wolverine to win the Butkus Award (1991).
