CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team fell short against second-ranked Wake Forest on Sunday (Aug. 27) at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, losing 3-0 after the Demon Deacons scored all three goals midway through the second half. It marks the fourth straight season that the Wolverines suffered a sweep at the annual early-season tournament.
After a close and scoreless first half, Wake Forest dominated play in the second, swarming around the U-M striking circle for much of the frame to outshoot the Wolverines 23-1 and outcorner them 7-0. Sophomore/freshman goalkeeper Paige Pickett (Dallas, Texas/Episcopal School of Dallas), who made her collegiate debut in the contest, opened the second half with several stops before the Demon Deacons converted deep in the U-M circle as Christine Suggs tallied the only goal they would need at the 45:43 mark.
Wake Forest extended its lead seven minutes out of the flurry following a pair of penalty corner opportunities. Accepting a pass from Lauren Crandall, who earned her second assist of the game on the play, Jamie Whitten blasted a hard shot past Pickett at 52:09. Michelle Kasold rounded out the Demon Deacons' goals at the 57:01 mark, scoring unassisted to give WFU the final three-goal advantage.
Wake Forest outshot the Wolverines 27-2 through both halves and outcornered them 8-0. Pickett was strong in her debut with 11 saves in the losing effort, while Kristina Gagliardi picked up one save to claim the shutout victory.
U-M will return to the road next weekend, heading out east for a pair of non-conference contests. Michigan will square off against Connecticut on Friday (Sept. 1) at 7 p.m. in Storrs, Conn., before venturing to Providence, R.I., on Sunday (Sept. 3) for a noon meeting against Providence.
