LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Despite a 6-3 shots-on-goal advantage and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks, the University of Michigan women's soccer team could not tally a score and allowed Kentucky to score the game's lone goal with just 41 seconds to play in a 1-0 loss Sunday afternoon (Sept. 10) at the UK Soccer Complex. The loss is Michigan's first of the season as the Wolverines fall to 3-1-2.
Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa) earned the first two shots on goal for Michigan 15 minutes into the match, but both shots were turned away by Anne Ogundele. The second save gave U-M a corner. Coffman's service went directly to Emily Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic), who fired a shot that had to be saved.
Michigan took three more shots the rest of the half, with one reaching the goal mouth. Despite a 6-1 shot advantage, the Wolverines had to settle for a 0-0 score at the halftime buzzer. The start of the second half was delayed 25 minutes due to lightning in the area.
Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic) had to make her first save 11 minutes into the second half on Kentucky's second shot of the game. Michigan continued its offensive pressure, earning two corners and two shots on goal by Coffman. Unfortunately, the Wolverines were still unable to bury any of their six shots on goal past Ogundele.
The teams continued to trade shots and corner attempts as neither team could net the first marker of the contest. Michigan secured a great scoring opportunity in the 84th minute on a corner kick, but Kentucky was able to clear.
Tuura looked to be the hero and force overtime, making a strong save with less than two minutes to go, but a shot by Megan Jones from 24 yards out with just 41 seconds remaining sailed over Tuura for the game's lone goal.
Michigan returns to host the first home night match of the season as U-M is set to take on Loyola Marymount on Friday (Sept. 15, 7 p.m.) at the U-M Soccer Field.
