Looking to get into the lineup are: senior Kevin Dore (Dundas, Ontario, Canada/St. Mary's), senior Will Kendall (Gerrards Cross, England/Oundle School), senior Matt McLaughlin (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook HS), senior Brian Schielke (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS), junior Brian Ottenweller (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS), junior Tim Schaetzel (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy), sophomore Nick Pumford (St. Charles, Mich./St. Charles HS), sophomore Bill Rankin (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS), freshman Billy McKay Jr. (Grand Blanc, Mich./David Leadbetter Golf Academy [Bradenton, Fla.]), freshman Ross Millman (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day) and freshman Michael Slovitt (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier HS).
TOURNEY ONE RECAP: Dore Leads U-M to 10th Place in Season-Opening Event
The Wolverines opened their 2006-07 season with a 10th-place showing at the 2006 Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate (Sept. 9-10) at the challenging and lengthy Rich Harvest Farms Golf Course in Sugar Grove Ill. The Maize and Blue closed with a 941 54-hole tournament total after posting team scores of 313 and 314 during Saturday's first 36 holes and closing with its second straight 314 in Sunday's final round. Kevin Dore led the Maize and Blue with a tie for 27th, posting 234 (76-76-82), Tim Schaetzel finished a stroke behind at 235 (77-79-79), which tied him for 30th and Bill Rankin tied for 39th with a 238 total (81-83-74) to round out the top three. Other Wolverine finishes included: Matt McLaughlin, tied for 51st with a 242 total (79-80-83); Brian Ottenweller, tied for 56th with a 244 total (86-79-79); and Brian Schielke, who played as an individual, tied for 54th with a 243 total (80-80-83).
The Staple of the Lineup
With the start at the Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate (Sept. 9-10), Tim Schaetzel has started the last 17 tournaments for the Maize and Blue. His streak extends three seasons, after starting the final four tournaments of the 2004-05 season, all 12 last season and the first this season. In 20 career tournaments, he has 19 starts.
Finding the Elusive Starting Spot
Kevin Dore made his first start in nearly a year after starting and leading the Wolverines at the season-opening Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate (Sept. 9-10). Dore has not played in a tournament for the Wolverines since playing in the 49er Collegiate Classic (Oct. 24-25, 2005) last fall. In 27 career events, Dore has 25 starts.
Chalk Up No. 2 in the Books
Brian Schielke played as an individual at the Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate, marking the second collegiate tournament in his career. He tied for 54th with a 243 total (80-80-83). After making the team as a walk-on last year, Schielke played in his first collegiate tournament at the 2005 Wolverine Intercollegiate (Sept. 24-25), placing 81st with a 233 total (79-78-76).
Looking to Capitalize at Home
The Wolverines will be looking to defend their 2005 Wolverine Intercollegiate team and individual titles. Michigan's in 2005 was the first team title for the program in four years. In addition, the Wolverines 839 54-hole team total smashed the program's top mark for a tournament tally by 16 strokes. The previous record was an 855 total at the 1992 Stanford Invitational (Oct. 17-19). Former Wolverine Christian Vozza (2003-06) used three straight under par rounds to win his first collegiate event giving U-M the sweep of the tournament trophies. Vozza finished with a one-shot victory with a career-best and U-M record-setting 205 total (67-69-69). He bettered the record of former All-American Michael Harris by a single shot. Harris held the record with a 206 (70-67-69) at the 2000 Dr. Pepper/Tanglewood Intercollegiate (March 25-26).
Returning for the Fifth Season
After being granted a medical hardship from a shoulder injury as a junior, Brandon Duff has returned for a fifth season with the Wolverines. Duff was one of just two Wolverines to play in all 12 tournaments a year ago and averaged a career-best 74.97 per round scoring average. He set career-bests in every statistical category, including shooting a three-under 68 in the first round of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational (Oct. 10, 2005). For his career, he has played in 25 tournaments and is shooting 76.38 per round.
The Graduate
In addition to Brandon Duff returning to the lineup, Will Kendall has returned for a final year after graduating in just three years with an economics degree. Kendall has enrolled in U-M's prestigious Stephen M. Ross School of Business and will be pursuing a Master of Accounting degree. Kendall has played in 12 career tournaments and has a career average of 77.00 per round. He shot a career-best two-under 69 in the third round of last year's Wolverine Intercollegiate (Sept. 25, 2005).
Rolling, Rolling, Rolling in Red Numbers
Michigan added up the red numbers on the scorecards all throughout the 2005-06 season. Through 12 regular-season tournaments, the Wolverines tallied 42 total rounds of par or better, 31 rounds under par with 17 total rounds under the 70-stroke mark. That was a dramatic increase from two years ago, when the Wolverines recorded just 15 total rounds under par and five under 70 strokes.
New Face Join the Maize and Blue
There will be a few changes to the Wolverines this season, as Chris Whitten joined the program as an assistant coach. Before joining the Wolverines staff in May 2006, Whitten was the assistant golf professional at the prestigious Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Prior to his work at Inverness, Whitten served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Notre Dame, for two years (2003-05).
Three Newcomers Join Wolverines Fold
In addition to Chris Whitten joining the coaching staff, the Maize and Blue welcome three newcomers to the team: Billy McKay Jr., Ross Millman and Michael Slovitt.
McKay, who graduated from the David Leadbetter Golf Academy in Bradenton, Fla., made his mark in Michigan as a junior after playing three years at Grand Blanc High School. In 2004, he won the Michigan State High School Championship and the Big Nine Conference Championship titles while helping Grand Blanc to both team titles as well. In 2005, he was youngest player ever to qualify for the PGA Buick Open at Warwick Hills Country Club in his hometown. He followed that by receiving a sponsor's exemption to play in the 2006 Buick Open.
Millman, who graduated from Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day in St. Louis, Mo., won individual medalist honors (2005) as well as back-to-back team titles (2004 and 2005) at the Missouri High School State Championships. The three-time All-ABC League first team selection was the medalist at both the district finals and ABC League Championships as a senior.
Slovitt, who was the No. 1-ranked junior in Illinois, won the Illinois State Junior Amateur Championship (2005) and held the lowest scoring average in the Illinois Junior Golf Association with a 71.67 per round score. Playing at New Trier High School, Slovitt won a conference individual championship (2003) and was a three-time all-conference and all-area selection (2003, '04, '05). He was a two-time team captain (2004, '05) and was an all-area honorary captain (2005).
