Assistant Coach Vogel Inducted into CMU Hall of Fame

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- University of Michigan wrestling volunteer coach Kevin Vogel, a seven-year member of the Wolverine coaching staff, was inducted into the Central Michigan University Athletics Hall of Fame in a ceremony Friday evening (Sept. 15) at the Mount Pleasant Holiday Inn. The six-member 2006 induction class -- the 23rd in the Hall's history, upping the number of inductees to 144 -- will also be recognized at the CMU-Akron football game on Saturday (Sept. 16).

To be eligible for induction, a former Chippewa athlete must be at least 10 years removed from school, must have earned multiple letters in one or more sports or brought recognition to the school by his or her athletic endeavors, and his or her outstanding career as an athlete must be continued by an exemplary career in his or her profession or occupation.
One of the most accomplished wrestlers in CMU history, Vogel finished his collegiate career with a 131-34-1 record, ranking him third on the Chippewas' career wins list. Vogel also holds the school records for career falls (66) and season falls with his nation-leading 28 pins in 1989-90. He won the Mid-American Conference Championship three times at 177 pounds (1989, '90, '92) and was twice named the MAC tournament's outstanding wrestler (1990, '92).
Following his graduation from Central Michigan, Vogel remained active in wrestling, winning numerous international and national-level tournaments, including the Nordvest Cup (1999), World Cup (1996), Sunkist International Open (1995) and the Henri Deglane Challenge (1994). He placed among the top four at the U.S. Nationals on four occasions (1993, '94, '95, '97) and was the 1993 U.S. Olympic Festival champion.
During Vogel's coaching tenure at Michigan, he has been instrumental in developing with the Wolverine middle- and upper-weight wrestlers as a sound technician and intense training partner. Among the notable performers under Vogel's guidance are two-time NCAA champion Ryan Bertin (2002-05), World Freestyle Team member Andy Hrovat (1999-2002) as well as fellow All-Americans Otto Olson (1997-2002), Kyle Smith (2000-03) and Ryan Churella (2003-06).
