Top-20 Trio Guides Wolverines to Third at Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The 15th-ranked University of Michigan men's cross country team earned a third-place finish in the 20-team Blue division at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday (Sept. 29). The Wolverines had a very good start on the 8,000-meter course, faded a little bit during the middle of the race, but finished strong.
Three Wolverines finished in the top 20, with sophomore Lex Williams (Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter) crossing the finish line first for Michigan, taking 17th with a mark of 24:12, 1:05 faster than his time last year at the Notre Dame Invitational. The next Wolverine across was junior Mike Woods (Ottawa, Ontario/Hillcrest) in 18th, clocking 24:17. Sophomore John Black (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) rounded out the top 20 with a time of 24:19, and sophomore/freshman Brandon Fellows (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) had another good showing, finishing 33rd (24:35).
Despite slow course conditions, senior/junior James Reichardt (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) also improved upon his time from last year by more than a minute, finishing 75th in 25:06, 1:20 faster.
The race was a great test for Michigan as several ranked schools participated, including No. 1 Wisconsin, No. 16 Notre Dame, No. 24 Florida State, No. 26 Florida, No. 27 Providence and No. 28 Eastern Michigan.
The Wolverines will have a two-week break before returning to action on Saturday, Oct. 14, at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind. The men's race is scheduled to begin at 12:10 p.m.
