SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Senior/junior Erin Webster (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child) continued her dominant month of September, earning her third straight victory while leading the third-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team to another win Friday (Sept. 29) at the Notre Dame Invitational. Several Wolverines set 5,000-meter personal records despite slow conditions.
Webster, who ran in the lead pack in the beginning of the race, made her move into first after the one-mile mark and set a personal record with an impressive 16:36. The Wolverines had two other runners finish in the top 10. Junior Alyson Kohlmeier (Sarnia, Ontario/St. Patrick's) showed an improvement in her second race of the season, taking third place with a time of 16:54, while junior/sophomore Nicole Edwards (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey) also set a personal record, clocking 17:02 and finishing in seventh place as the third Wolverine across the finish line. Both Kohlmeier and Edwards had tremendous finishes, each passing three or four runners over the final kilometer of the race.
Other Wolverines setting personal records included fifth-year senior Arianne Field (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett), who came in 17th with a mark of 17:14; junior/sophomore Claire Otwell (Traverse City, Mich./Central), who finished 29th with a time of 17:27; and senior/junior Lisa Uible (Cincinnati, Ohio/Upper Arlington), who finished 36th with a mark of 17:34.
Grad/senior Katie Gwyther (Madison, N.H./Kennet), who was schedule to participate, did not run due to illness.
All eight of Michigan's runners finished in the top 81 spots of the 157-person field. The Michigan victory came against several ranked schools: No. 7 Illinois, No. 12 North Carolina State, No. 16 Providence, No. 27 Georgia and No. 29 Florida State.
The Wolverines will have a two-week break before returning to action on Saturday, Oct. 14, at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind. The women's race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
