STILLWATER, Okla. -- Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) scored in the 89th minute to lift the University of Michigan women's soccer team to a 1-1 tie at Oklahoma State on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 3) at the Cowgirl Corral. Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic) knocked away nine shots to back the Wolverines in their third double-overtime game this season.
Tuura had to make a save just four minutes in to prevent an OSU early score. Dobbyn finally got the offense going for Michigan in the 22nd minute, recording the first shot on goal for the Wolverines. Oklahoma presented a strong attack up front, but Michigan was equal to the task despite an 8-6 shot deficit in the first stanza, and the battle-filled half ended scoreless for the fourth straight contest.
The second half saw much of the same defensive style of play. Only five of 14 shots in the second frame had to be knocked aside. The Wolverines earned their first dynamic scoring opportunity of the game in the 78th minute. Danelle Underwood (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) beat a defender and put a rocket on goal that fooled Cowgirl goalkeeper Jeanne Rankin. The shot was deflected over the bar and U-M earned a corner. Underwood's corner attempt went to Lindsey MacDonald (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) in a good scoring position. MacDonald fired a shot on goal that Rankin barely put a hand on.
The Cowgirls used the momentum from Rankin's play and raced down to tally the first score of the game at 79:45. Oklahoma State's Jesyca Rosholt gathered a pass at the top of the 18-yard box, made a move and struck a shot into the corner to put OSU up 1-0.
In the waning minutes of regulation, Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa) collected a clearing pass in the midfield, turned and lofted a longball over the top of the defense to Dobbyn. The junior striker ran onto the feed, beat Rankin with a deke and buried a shot into the net with just 1:12 remaining to tie the match at 1-1 and help force overtime.
In a back-and-forth overtime session, Michigan's defense held off five shots and three corners by the Cowgirls to earn U-M its second tie of the season. Oklahoma State recorded the only shot in the first overtime. The play occurred right in front of the Michigan net, but strong defensive pressure by the Wolverines in an OSU offensive scramble culminated in a clear just before the ball crossed the line.
U-M's best chance came in the second overtime on a failed corner attempt. Tuura made two saves in the second extra frame, including slapping away an OSU shot with less than two minutes to play.
Michigan heads on the road again next Friday (Sept. 8) as it takes on Dayton at 2 p.m. at Baujan Field.

NOTES
• The Wolverines remain undefeated through four games (2-0-2) for the second straight season and for the fourth time in program history. U-M started out 2-0-2 in 2005 before falling. Michigan began both the 1998 and 2002 seasons 5-0 before suffering its first loss.
• Megan Tuura's nine saves moved her into second place all-time on the career saves list at Michigan. She passed Suzie Grech (2000-03) and has now compiled 265 career blocks, which places her 63 saves behind all-time leader Carissa Stewart (1997-2000).
• Tuura's save total is her highest since she stopped nine shots in a 3-2 win over Northwestern on Oct. 7, 2005.
• Melissa Dobbyn's goal is her second in as many games. She has scored in back-to-back games for the eighth time in her career. Dobbyn cracked the top 10 in all-time points with her score, moving past Mari Hoff's (1996-99) 56 into 10th place all-time. The junior striker has tallied 23 goals and 11 helpers for 57 points in her career.
• Dobbyn led the team in shots with four and has been the top Wolverine shooter in three out of four games this season.
• The Wolverines have reached double figures in shots in all four matches this season. Michigan fired off 14 in today's contest.
• Michigan has played to two overtimes in three of four contests this season. The program record for double-overtime matches in a season is five in 2000. Two out of the five came in the postseason. Michigan dropped a 1-0 decision in the third overtime against Penn State in the final of the 2000 Big Ten Tournament and defeated Miami (Ohio) 4-3 in double overtime in the first round of the 2000 NCAA Tournament.
QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On today's overtime draw ... "Both teams played tough. The first half was evenly played and we got a little fatigued in the heat in the second half. We were pressing just before they got the momentum back and scored their goal. We had just had two good opportunities and they were able to score off a change in momentum. They are a strong team and have a couple of really good players. We hung tough, earned the late chance, and scored with a minute left. It was just a hard-fought game."
On the tying score with 1:12 remaining ... "We were under a lot of pressure at the end of the match. Judy (Coffman) dribbled out and served the long ball because time was running out. We needed to pressure and dump something into the offensive end. She served Melissa (Dobbyn) over the top running at their backline. It was a wonderful combination."
