ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Head coach Mike McGuire has named the captains of the 2006 University of Michigan women's cross country squad, going with three fifth-year seniors in Katie Erdman (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac), Arianne Field (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett) and Jessie Stewart (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix).
"Katie, Arianne and Jessie have impacted our program and are most-deserving of the honor of being captain," said McGuire. "They embody the requisite qualities that are associated with the leadership role for this team."
Erdman finished 28th at the Big Ten Championships last season and placed 94th in the NCAA meet in 2004. Her success at the Big Ten Championships has earned her two spots on the All-Big Ten second team, in 2003 and 2004. Erdman has earned three Academic All-Big Ten citations and has received four U-M Athletic Academic Athletic Achievement awards.
Field earned All-Big Ten second team honors last season for her strong performance at the conference championships. She also finished among the top 20 runners in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet last year. Field has received three Academic All-Big Ten citations and four U-M Athletic Academic Achievement awards during her collegiate career.
Stewart was one of the top five Wolverines to cross the finish line in three meets last season. She capped her strong season by finishing 97th overall at the NCAA Championships. Stewart has been awarded two Academic All-Big Ten citations and has earned four U-M Athletic Academic Athletic Achievement awards.
Field, Stewart and Erdman have helped the Wolverines to win the last five Big Ten championships as well as assisting Michigan in back-to-back NCAA Great Lakes regional titles.
