Men's Gymnastics Claims Windy City Invite Title

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan mens gymnastics team claimed the 37th annual Windy City Invitational with a final score of 212.750 on Saturday (Jan. 13). U-M won the invitational for the first time since 2001.
The Wolverines opened the competition with a good start, as they took control of the first rotation with a total of 71.400. Led by sophomore Scott Bregman (Lawrence, Kan./Free State HS) second place performance on the floor exercise (9.250), the Maize and Blue tallied a total of 36.550. Sophomore Ralph Rosso (Morganville, N.J./St. John Vianny HS) tied for third with a personal-best of 9.200.
After the first rotation, Michigan never looked back claiming the next two of four events to remain in the lead the entire duration of the meet.
On the pommel horse, fifth-year senior Justin Laury (Marietta, Ga./McEachern HS) took first place with a performance of 9.050, as he was the only competitor to reach the 9.000 mark on the horse. Freshman Mel Santander (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional HS) added 8.800 to the Michigan total after taking fifth place on the pommel horse.
On the still rings, U-M was led by freshman Torrance Laury (Marietta, Ga./McEachern HS) with a performance of 9.100 to take fourth place. Rosso tied his personal-best with a 9.050 for fifth place.
Senior/junior Andrew Elkind (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East HS) and Justin Laury took second and third on the parallel bars posting personal-best totals of 9.500 and 9.400, respectively. Torrance Laury tied for fourth with a total of 9.300 to assist the Wolverines to claim its third event win.
The Wolverines closed out the competition with a strong showing on the horizontal bars as Elkind and sophomore Joe Catrambone (Deptford, N.J./Glouchester Catholic HS) tied for first with totals of 9.100.
In the all-around, Santander finished third with a total of 50.750 -- 1.95 points from first place finisher Wes Haagensen of Illinois-Urbana.
The Wolverines return to action next weekend in their home opener when they host preseason No. 5 Penn State on Saturday (Jan. 21) at 7:30 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena.
