EAST LANSING, Mich. -- On a rain-soaked Sunday afternoon (Oct. 14), the No. 21-ranked University of Michigan men's soccer team suffered its fourth straight loss, falling 5-0 to the Michigan State Spartans at Old College Field. MSU (9-1-2, 2-1-1 Big Ten) scored two first-half goals on penalty kicks, with the secord coming at 32:05 after a red card that forced U-M (8-4-1, 0-2-1 Big Ten) to play a man down for the final 57:55.
The Spartans got out ahead early when, at 2:59, Doug DeMartin scored on a penalty kick after U-M junior/sophomore goalkeeper Patrick Sperry(Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) received a yellow card.
Ten minutes later, MSU had a prime scoring opportunity five yards out, but freshman defender Jeff Quijano(Simi Valley, Calif./Canoga) stood strong with an impressive block. The rebound went right back to the Green and White, and Sperry made a diving save of a point-blank shot from three yards out to prevent further damage.
On the attack, Michigan had a chance when junior midfielder Alex Morisset(Shelby Township, Mich./De La Salle) sent a perfect cross to junior forward Steve Bonnell(St. Clair Shores, Mich./Country Day), who headed the ball wide.
Things seemed to brighten up for the Wolverines at the 24-minute mark when sophomore/freshman forward Matt Schmitt(Muskegon, Mich./Reeths-Puffer) was ahead of the defense only yards from the goal. He mailed a cross to sophomore forward Peri Marosevic (Rockford, Ill./Edison), but Marosevic could not gain control of the ball, and MSU retook possession.
At 32:05, sophomore defender Julian Robles (Los Angeles, Calif./Damien) received a red card to put Michigan down a man for the rest of the match. MSU scored its second goal on the ensuing penalty kick by DeMartin to make the score 2-0.
Michigan looked to have an edge on corner kick by a junior midfielder Jake Stacy's (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central). The Wolverines took two shots from inside the six-yard box, but the first shot by Bonnell was blocked and MSU goalie Chris Austin made a great save of junior midfielder Nader Jarun's (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh) attempt off the rebound to stop the Wolverine attack and clear the ball.
Sperry made a dazzling diving stop with four minutes left in the first half on an MSU attack.
Ten minutes into the second half, MSU struck again when freshman Spencer Thompson kicked a ball to the right of the net, putting the Spartans up 3-0. Michigan State came up with its fourth goal in the 66th minute on a shot past the outstretched Sperry.
Stacy had an opportunity to put the Wolverines on the board late in the second half with a penalty shot, but his attempt hit the left post. The Spartans scored again at the 75-minute mark with a shot to the upper right of the box, making the score 5-0.
Michigan will host Bowling Green at 7 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 17) on the U-M Soccer Field.
