ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior forward Steve Bonnell (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Detroit Country Day) scored two consecutive goals early in the first half, as the University of Michigan men's soccer team took an early lead on the Bowling Green Falcons and never relinquished it to win its ninth match of the season, 5-2, Wednesday (Oct. 17) on the U-M Soccer Field.

Steve Bonnell
The Wolverines started aggressively, with Bonnell scoring a goal on a missed pass by a Bowling Green defender at 2:51. The Falcon goalkeeper came up to get the ball and Bonnell ran free to the net.
Bonnell tallied his second goal at 15:21 after he blocked the BGSU goalkeeper's clearing attempt and shot the ball into the net.
Senior junior midfielder Steve Hecker (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) got in on the action after sophomore forward Peri Marosevic (Rockford, Ill./Edison Academy) sent a perfect cross to the right side of the field. Hecker sent the ball past the BGSU keeper to the bottom right of the net at 20:04.
Later in the half, Marosevic looked to have a goal of his own when he juked past a Falcon defender and ripped a shot on goal -- however, the Bowling Green keeper saved the attempt.
Michigan scored for the fourth time in the match -- this time off a corner kick by junior midfielder Jake Stacy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills). The ball was sent flawlessly to junior defender Michael Holody (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston), who headed the assist into the net to put Michigan up, 4-0, at 34:16.
The U-M defense did not go unscathed. At 57:29, Bowling Green headed a ball into the bottom left of the net beyond junior/sophomore goalkeeper Patrick Sperry (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) -- the only goal he allowed in the game.
At 74:43, junior midfielder Nader Jarun (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh) earned his first goal as a Wolverine when he caught a pass from Stacy and rolled it past the BGSU keeper into the middle of the net.
Stacy appeared to have a score to add to his two assists when he sent a ball from beyond the 18-yard box, but Stacy's ball hit the crossbar and the Falcons were able to clear it.
Bowling Green had another opportunity late in the second half, but senior goalkeeper Tom Huls (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) jumped up to clear the ball.
The Falcons scored once more in the match at 85:50, when Bowling Green bent a perfect shot into the upper right of the goalie box past a leaping Huls to put make the score 5-2.
Michigan will face Big Ten rival No. 9 Northwestern Saturday (Oct. 20) on the U-M Soccer Field at 7 p.m.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On the win... "More than anything, it's great to see when things transfer from the practice field to the game field. One of the things we talked about to the guys was doing the unglamorous part of their job well. Bonnell was rewarded with two goals by doing just that."
On Jarun getting his first goal ... "He is a crowd favorite, a favorite on the team, I couldn't be happier for him. He deserves every minute he gets and certainly that goal."
On the team's attitude going into the game... "I think it was an attitude about 'walking the walk.' In the last four games prior to this, there were a lot of guys who spoke about feelings and now it was time to show how we could put that in play against a team that was scrappy and dangerous and posed some problems for us on the field."
On the upcoming match with Northwestern... "They are a great team. They are deserving of their national ranking. We have a lot of respect for them. They pose many challenges for us. It's not going to be a high-scoring affair where you sit on the edge of your seat watching it."
Junior Midfielder Nader Jarun
On starting last game ... "It was a surprise for me. At the beginning of the season, I was fighting an injury. I wasn't really playing my game in practice or during the games. I ended up having to take to weeks off in the boot and when I came back I was able to work with the players like I was during the summer. It was as surprise to get the start but I am just happy to be 100 percent now. Hopefully it continues."
On how it feels to know he earned the start... "It feels incredible. All you can do is extra work on the side and get healthy in the training room and hope for opportunities."
