ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team battled Northwestern to a 0-0 tie in double overtime Friday evening (Oct. 19) on U-M Soccer Field. The Wolverines rattled off the first four shots of extra time before the Wildcats posted five-straight shots in the two extra periods, but the Michigan defense was able to contain the threats, leaving the teams deadlocked after 110 minutes of action.

Melissa Dobbyn
Junior goalkeeper Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) made two saves to earn her third double-overtime shutout of the season. Senior Katie Bohard (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) led the Wolverines with four shots, while senior Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) became the U-M all-time leader in shots with the 300th and 301st strikes of her career.
Much of regulation was spent with battles in midfield, as neither team was able to create many scoring chances. Michigan got the first big chance of the game in the 48th minute off of a corner kick from Dobbyn. Freshman Jackie Carron (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) headed the volley wide of the net to a Northwestern defender. With a crowd in the box, the Wildcat player couldn't clear the ball, playing it to the feet of graduate-senior Lindsey Cottrell (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central), who tried to snap the ball into the net. Cottrell's bullet got caught in the crowd and careened off a teammate and away from the net.
Northwestern laid claim to the best chance of the overtime, but Gates was there to stifle the attack. With 10 seconds left in the first extra frame, Jenny Dunn received a pass in a clearing between two Wolverine defenders and raced in alone on Gates. With the two defenders bearing down on her, Dunn let go a shot that the Wolverine goalie handled cleanly.
Despite Michigan outshooting the Wildcats, 19-15, and U-M edging NU out in corner kicks, 7-3, the Wolverines settled for the tie when the final horn sounded.
The Wolverines will take on Wisconsin Sunday (Oct. 21) on U-M Soccer Field at 1 p.m. The contest is Michigan's final matinee home game of the season.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On today's game ... "I think, again, defensively we were so solid. Some of those opportunities (for the offense) were exciting. It's been tough to put the ball in the back of the net, that's for sure."
On the bounces not going Michigan's way ... "It's frustrating, but I think the girls have done a really good job of staying focused. They come out to play every game, and that's all you can ask from them. They don't put their heads down."
U-M Graduate-Senior Defender Lindsey Cottrell
On the corner she almost scored on ... "It's a scramble. So many of the Big Ten goals are like that. They are not these pretty goals, they are who can get a toe poke in, who can get that, who can get this. It's frustrating, but we are going to just keep plugging away."
U-M Senior Forward Melissa Dobbyn
On breaking the career shots record ... "I'm really proud to be up there with the likes of (Abby) Crumpton and (Kacy) Beitel. It's exciting to know that I am creating opportunities and being dangerous."
