ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Three members of the University of Michigan women's tennis team are still alive after the second day of main draw action (Saturday, Oct. 20) at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships, held at the Varsity Tennis Center. Sophomore Tania Mahtani(Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) earned a pair of victories to reach the round of 16 in singles, while junior Chisako Sugiyama(Parsippany, N.J./The Montclair Kimberley Academy) and freshman Whitney Taney(Edina, Minn./Edina HS) recorded one more win to advance to the doubles quarterfinals.

Mahtani got off to an impressive start in the 64-player draw, as she battled back to upset Notre Dame's No. 110-ranked Colleen Rielley in three sets, 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2. It was Mahtani's 31st singles win in just 44 tries at Michigan. She had an easier time disposing of her second-round opponent, earning a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Minnesota's Tijana Koprivica. Mahtani will face Northwestern's Maria Mosolova in the third round on Sunday (Oct. 21).

Sugiyama and Taney improved their season record to a perfect 6-0 thanks to a commanding 8-1 triumph over Minnesota's Karina Chiarelli and Alessandra Ferrazzi in the third round of the 64-team doubles draw. The Wolverine duo will take on Northwestern's Lauren Lui and Georgia Rose in the quarterfinals on Sunday at 10 a.m.
