Corner Kicks: Illinois
The Illini (9-5-1, 4-3-1 Big Ten) are coming off of a rollercoaster weekend in which they knocked off No. 24 Indiana, 3-0, before they fell in a close match with No. 5 Purdue, 2-1. Senior forward Ella Masar was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after a two-goal performance against the Hoosiers. Masar leads Illinois with eight goals, including four of the game-winning variety. Senior Lindsey Carstens has eight shutouts this season, contributing to her 0.87 goals-against average.
Head coach Janet Rayfield is in her sixth year at the helm for Illinois. Michigan holds a 9-4-1 edge in the all-time series, having taken the last two meetings. After knocking off Illinois in the 2005 Big Ten Tounament semifinals, Michigan upset then-No. 24 Illinois, 2-1, during the 2006 regular season. Illinois on the Internet: www.fightingillini.com.
Corner Kicks: Oakland
Oakland (7-7-1, 5-2-0 Summit) held a first half lead over No. 24 Indiana this weekend, but two second half goals doomed the Golden Grizzlies as they lost, 2-1. Oakland has three players with 10 or more points, led by senior Kristi Tomczyk's 18 points off of eight goals and a pair of helpers. Senior Jamie Hulet has three game-winning goals, and junior Jessica Boyle has six assists. Junior Kim Herbst and freshman Elizabeth Watza have split time in net, combining for a 1.50 team goals-against and four shutouts.
Nick O'Shea is in his 14th season as head coach for Oakland. He has a 3-6-1 all-time mark against the Wolverines. The Golden Grizzlies have proven to be a headache for the Wolverines recently, taking three of the last four matches. Oakland on the Internet: www.ougrizzlies.com.
The Week That Was
Melissa Dobbyn delivered the game-winning goal in the 79th minute to give the Wolverines a 2-1 victory over Wisconsin on Sunday (Oct. 21) to keep Michigan in the hunt for a Big Ten Tournament berth. U-M turned to seniors Sarah Banco (Medfield, Mass./Noble and Greenough School) and Dobbyn, as the duo put up its biggest offensive outburst in a month to snap a scoreless streak of 469:40. The Michigan defense allowed just a single shot on goal and held the Badgers without a corner kick.
On Friday, Michigan battled Northwestern to a 0-0 tie in double overtime in front of a national television audience on the Big Ten Network. Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) made two saves to earn her third double-overtime shutout of the season. Dobbyn became U-M's all-time leader in shots with the 300th and 301st strikes of her career.
Leaders and Best
Through 15 games, Amanda Bowery (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) leads the Wolverine offense with 10 points, followed by Sarah Banco (Medfield, Mass./Noble and Greenough School) with seven points. Katie Bohard (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) added her team-leading third helper for the season against Wisconsin (Oct. 21). Melissa Dobbyn and Bowery have taken the most cracks at the net with 35 and 31 shots, respectively. Madison Gates has shouldered the load in goal, playing 1,403-plus minutes with a 1.09 goals-against average. Gates has three shutouts for the season, and played the majority of two combined-shutouts with Lindsay Yakel (Shelby Township, Mich./Utica).
Dobbyn Adds Career Shots Record To Resum
Senior Melissa Dobbyn moved past Abby Crumpton's (1999-2002) program record of 300 shots on Friday (Oct. 19) against Northwestern. The senior forward had seven shots over the weekend, establishing the new program record at 306 and counting.
Dobbyn On The Career Charts
Senior Melissa Dobbyn leapfrogged Ruth Poulin (1994-97) into sixth place on the U-M all-time points list. Dobbyn now has 72 career points and needs nine more to catch Jessica Limauro (1995-98), who is next on the list in fifth place with 79 career points. Crumpton holds the top spot on the list with 116 points.
Dobbyn is also near the top five in goals (27, three short of fifth place) and assists (18, one shy of fifth place) on the U-M career list.

Melissa Dobbyn moved into13th place with her 70th career start against Wisconsin (Oct. 21).
Cottrell is also climbing the U-M all-time minutes played list. She jumped into third place with 6,740 minutes logged.
