ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team completed the sweep of Boston University with a 6-2 win Saturday (Oct. 27) at Yost Ice Arena. Fourteen Wolverines collected a point in the contest, with freshmen Max Pacioretty (New Canaan, Conn.), Louie Caporusso (Woodbridge, Ontario) and Carl Hagelin (Sodertalje, Sweden) leading the charge with a goal and an assist apiece.
The Maize and Blue wasted no time in taking the 1-0 lead on the second shift of the night. After an apparent goal was disallowed the shift before, Tim Miller (Davisburg, Mich.) received a pass from Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and skated around his man in the right faceoff circle. Miller dished a backhand pass low into the slot, where Ben Winnett (New Westminster, B.C.) was stationed. The freshman gained control of the pass and flicked a shot over Karson Gillespie's right leg 42 seconds into the contest.
With the man advantage, a trio of freshmen made a tic-tac-toe series of passes, and Michigan pushed its lead to a pair of goals. Chad Langlais (Spokane, Wash.) sent a pass to Aaron Palushaj (Northville, Mich.), who flipped it through traffic to the front of the net. The relay was nabbed by Pacioretty, and the left winger blasted a one-timer that gave him the first goal of his career at 2:25.
Billy Sauer (Walworth, N.Y.) mishandled the puck behind his own net, allowing Boston University to get on the board. Chris Higgins collected the puck from the flustered netminder and backhanded a pass to Jason Lawrence, who deposited it into the vacated net at 1:38 of the middle frame.
Michigan pushed its advantage back to two tallies at 5:42. Mark Mitera (Livonia, Mich.) roped a 150-foot pass up ice that hit Hagelin perfectly on the tape of his stick. Hagelin split the defense and raced in alone on Gillespie before roofing a shot over his glove for the power-play marker and his third goal of the season. Sauer picked up the second assist on the play.
With his second goal of the season, Caporusso gave U-M a 4-1 lead. Kevin Quick (Buffalo, N.Y.) scooped up a pass from Hagelin and snapped a shot toward the net. The attempt was redirected in front of the goal mouth by Caporusso at 6:43.
Travis Turnbull's (Chesterfield, Mo.) goal gave the Maize and Blue a four-goal advantage midway through the final frame. After receiving a pass from Caporusso, the junior eluded two defenders and cut in on Gillespie, lighting the lamp for the Wolverines at 10:04.
U-M's lead continued to grow with Chad Kolarik's (Abington, Pa.) second goal of the 2007-08 campaign. Amidst a scrum in the front of the net, the alternate captain emerged with the puck and deftly slid it under Gillespie for the 6-1 advantage at 14:06. Both Porter and Pacioretty picked up helpers on the marker.
With time winding down in the game, Nick Bonino tacked on a goal for Boston University. Higgins swatted the puck out of the air and into a mob of players in front of the crease. Bonino settled the disc and slid it under Sauer's outstretched pad with seven seconds remaining in regulation.
Michigan goes back on the road next weekend, taking on Nebraska-Omaha for a two-game stint. Friday's (Nov. 2) game is scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m. CDT and will be televised on CSTV.
