EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan rowing team competed in a 3,200-meter head race against Michigan State at Grand River Park Sunday morning (Oct. 28). Each team boated fours, quads, doubles and pairs. Michigan's best performances came from its fours, which placed first and second ahead of the Spartans.
The Wolverines raced one quad, which finished second to MSU. The Spartans also had second quad competing that took third. Michigan's two doubles were third and sixth, and the Spartans had four doubles. The finish among the pairs was the same as the doubles -- MSU took first, second, fourth and fifth, while the Maize and Blue took third and sixth.
In addition, U-M's novice squad took part in its first competition of the fall. Michigan and Michigan State's novices matched up in six four-minute pieces rather than racing 3,200 meters like the varsity. The first flight had two MSU eights and one U-M eight. The second flight had one eight from each school.
Michigan's last varsity competition of the fall will be next Sunday (Nov. 4) at the Chicago Head Race. The event will include most of the Big Ten Conference schools and involve a head race in the morning and 2,000-meter racing in the afternoon.
