TEAM NOTABLES
In four fall tournaments this season, Michigan has posted three top-five finishes, winning Purdue's Midwest Shootout (Sept. 8), posting a runner-up finish at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate (Sept. 22-23), and tying for fifth at the Windon Memorial Classic (Oct. 7-8). The Maize and Blue has also produced three medalist honors. Tim Schaetzel and Bill Rankin shared the top spot at the Midwest Shootout with three other players, while Nick Pumford, playing as an individual, earned his first career tournament victory at the Wolf Run.
With the team title at Purdue's Midwest Shootout, Michigan won its first tournament title since 2005, when the Wolverines posted an 11-shot win at their own Wolverine Intercollegiate (Sept. 24-25) at the U-M Golf Course. The title marks the second team title in the six-year career of head coach Andrew Sapp.
The team win at Purdue's Midwest Shootout marked 20 years since Michigan opened the season with a team victory. The last time the Wolverines posted a team win in the first tournament of the season was during the 1987-88 season, when the Maize and Blue won the Wolverine Invitational (Oct. 10-11, 1987).
Playing as an individual at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate, Nick Pumford claimed the first medalist honor of his Michigan career. After he opened with a one-under 70, Pumford followed with a two-over 73 to sit one-over after 36 holes. Using a career-best-tying four-under 67 in the final round, Pumford went on to win with a three-under 210 event total.
Tim Schaetzel and Bill Rankin each won his first medalist honor at Michigan, sharing the top individual spot with three others at Purdue's Midwest Shootout. Schaetzel's previous best was a tie for third at the Oklahoma Intercollegiate (Oct. 15-17, 2006) and the Nike Purdue Kiahuna Collegiate Invitational (Nov. 22-23, 2006). Rankin's previous best tournament finish was a runner-up effort at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate (March 18-20, 2007).
Tim Schaetzel, Bill Rankin and Lion Kim have started all five tournaments this season for Michigan. The quad group of Wolverines has produced 10 of U-M's 18 single-round tallies of par or better.
Michigan has posted team totals of 299 or below in its last nine straight team rounds. For the season, the Wolverines are averaging 293.46 per team round with just two of the 13 rounds to date over 300. The Maize and Blue have a season best of one-under 283 in the first round of the Wolf Run Intercollegiate.
Michigan's second round three-under 285 team total at the Prestige (Oct. 15-16) was U-M's third best output of the season. However, with the tournament being set at a par 72, the round was the lowest sub-par team round of the season at three-under. It was the Wolverines second team round of the season under par.
Both Nick Pumford and Alexander Sitompul have recorded the Wolverines' best single-round tally with a four-under 67. Pumford had his in the third round of the Wolf Run Intercollegiate, while Sitompul had his in the first round of the Windon Memorial Classic. The duo added their names to the list of the seventh best all-time single-round tally by a Wolverine in a tournament. It also marked the 23rd and 24th times in U-M history a player has recorded a 67.
