ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team silenced the Big Ten's top offense to earn a 0-0 tie against No. 8 Purdue Sunday (Oct. 7) on U-M Soccer Field. The Wolverines used strong and smart defense to keep the Boilermakers' scoring threats outside of the 18-yard box, and U-M received key saves from junior goalkeeper Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) when needed to hold Purdue off the board.
Gates made six saves in the effort, earning her second shutout of the season against a team ranked in the top 10 of the NSCAA poll. The defensive pack of graduate-senior Lindsey Cottrell (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central), fifth-year senior Emily Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic), sophomore Kylie Neschke (Still River, Mass./Tabor Academy) and freshman Jackie Carron (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) spent the unseasonably warm afternoon frustrating the Boilermaker offense almost every trip down field.
The first half of regulation was spent in the middle-third of the field as both teams battled for possession and precious scoring opportunities. Purdue got their best chance late in the frame off of the foot of Jessica Okoroafo. The Boilermaker attacker ripped a shot from 15 yards out towards the top of the net. Gates went airborne and batted the ball off the crossbar back into the box. On the way down from her leaping save, the Wolverine goalkeeper managed to find the loose rebound and smother the ball to end the threat.
The Wolverines came out firing in the second half, letting 12 attempts go on net. Michigan threatened to end the game in regulation in the 89th minute, rattling off three quick strikes in succession. Junior Katie Miler (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) got together with freshman Amanda Bowery (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) on a give-and-go to start the onslaught. Miler took a shot from the left that a sliding Purdue player knocked aside -- right to the feet of sophomore Brittany Magee (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman). Magee tried to get a quick shot off but another Purdue defender made a block. Bowery corralled the ball and took another crack at the net, but the Boilermakers once again got in front of the ball -- this time they forced a corner kick. Michigan took the kick but it was cleared away as regulation came to a close.
After a quiet first overtime both teams got a fresh wind in the second extra-stanza. Purdue had a good chance at a deciding goal in the 106th minute. Jessica Stellhorn got a through ball in the box and had an open line to the goal. As she dribbled the ball forward to set up a higher percentage shot, Carron came flying in from the side to make a game saving slide tackle. Michigan continued to play a consistently strong level of defense until the final buzzer.
Michigan's Big Ten schedule continues next weekend, when the Wolverines to Columbus, Ohio, Friday (Oct. 12) to face Ohio State in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The game is set for 7:30 p.m.

NOTES
• Junior goalkeeper Madison Gates is yet to allow a goal against a team ranked in the top 10 of the NSCAA poll this season. Gates registered a shutout against then-No. 2 Notre Dame Friday, Aug. 31, and again against No. 8 Purdue Sunday (Oct. 7).
• Madison Gates remained perfect in overtime games for her career. She is yet to allow a goal in four double-overtime contests (0-0-4 lifetime).
• Graduate-senior Lindsey Cottrell moved into a tie for 12th on the U-M career starts list. Cottrell has been in the starting lineup 72 times in her career, matching the career total of Therese Heaton (2002-05).
• Senior Melissa Dobbyn led the Wolverines with four shots today, bringing her career total to 297. The U-M forward needs just three more strikes to tie Abby Crumpton's (1999-2002) program record of 300 shots.
• Michigan snapped Purdue's 11-game winning streak with the 0-0 tie.
• Senior Sarah Banco had her career-best point streak ended against Purdue. She had five points during the three game span (2 G, 1 A).
• The Maize and Blue own a 10-4-4 all-time mark in weekend series against Indiana and Purdue. The Wolverines tied Indiana, 1-1, Thursday (Oct. 4) before the scoreless tie against Purdue.
QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On the effort of the defense ... "I thought this whole weekend they stayed organized and they were taking the ball away before they were shots. They were also creating plays out of the back and moving it forward. In the second half, there was a complete change of momentum and we had better opportunities. I thought that started from our back going forward, so I was happy with that."
On the fatigue factor on a hot day ... "Yes, (fatigue was a factor), but it also set in for them. I think in the second half, we were a little bit more energized than they were. We felt like, when we came off at the end of the game to go into overtime that we had a little bit of an edge. I felt fatigue meant that both teams (needed to show) who could hang on, really."
U-M Freshman Defender Jackie Carron
On defending against the Boilermakers potent offense ... "It was really tough, especially since it was so hot. We just had to keep them in front of us and not let them turn us. It worked."
On the play of goalkeeper Madison Gates ... "She was outstanding back there. That one save she made where she tipped it over and got it -- we might have been a goal down without her."
