ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Four members of the University of Michigan men's tennis team advanced to the third round of the Big Ten Conference Singles Championship after Saturday's (Nov. 10) first day of main draw action at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Defending champion and No. 1 seed Matko Maravic(Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) earned a pair of straight-set victories and will face Minnesota's Tobias Wernet in the round of 16.
Junior Peter Aarts(Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) opened play with a straight-set triumph and then battled back to pick up a nice win in the second round. He will meet Purdue's Branko Kuzmanovic in the third round.
Sophomore Mike Sroczynski(Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School), the No. 4 seed in the 64-player draw, also moved through the first two rounds in straight sets and will meet Indiana's Phillip Eilers in the round of 16.
Freshman Jason Jung(Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS), the sixth seed, posted a pair of 6-4, 6-1 victories to advance to play Wisconsin's Michael Muskievicz.
Five Wolverines are still alive in the 64-player consolation bracket.
The second round of consolation play will begin Sunday (Nov. 11) at 8 a.m., followed by the third round and quarterfinals of the main draw.
