Edwards Named Great Lakes Regional Athlete of the Year

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior/junior Nicole Edwards(Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey) of the University of Michigan women's cross country team was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Great Lakes Region Athlete of the Year today (Friday, Nov. 16). This is the second consecutive year she has won the award.
Edwards won her second straight NCAA Great Lakes Regional title on Nov. 10 at the Indiana Championship Course in Bloomington, Ind. Edwards' winning time of 20:30.76 made her Michigan's first two-time individual regional champion. The Wolverines (63 points) finished second, just three points behind team champion Michigan State, to earn an automatic trip to nationals.
Edwards finished seventh at the Big Ten meet (Oct. 28) and 11th at the NCAA Pre-Nationals (Oct. 13) this season. She placed 12th at last year's NCAA Cross Country Championships.
Four other Michigan harriers earned All-Great Lakes Regional honors by placing in the top 25. Fifth-year senior Erin Webster(Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child) crossed the line in third place overall (20:47.23) for the best regional finish of her career, junior/sophomore Geena Gall(Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) came in 16th (21:30.35), senior Lisa Uible(Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) was 20th (21.37.45), and freshman Danielle Tauro(Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) took 23rd (21:44.91).
The Wolverines will conclude the season on Monday (Nov. 19) at the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. The 6,000-meter women's race will begin at 12:55 p.m. at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course. The meet will be televised and webcast live on CSTV.
