U-M Leads Wisconsin, Northwestern After Day One

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The No. 5 University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team claimed a 60-50 lead over No. 18-ranked Northwestern and a 80-30 lead against Wisconsin in day one Friday (Nov. 16) in the Norris Aquatics Center.
The Wolverines began the meet with an NCAA Qualifying 'A' time of 1:21.95 from the 200-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Chris Brady(Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant HS), junior Bobby Savulich(Edison, N.J./Saint Joseph), junior Curtis Dauw (St. Charles, Ill./East) and junior Jamie Martone(Troy, Mich./Troy HS).
Two U-M teams recorded NCAA times in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Sophomore Andr Schultz(Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Palmares), sophomore Scott Spann(Austin, Texas/Westlake HS), Chris Brady and Bobby Savulich clocked in a NCAA Qualifying 'A' time of 3:16.29. Sophomore Alon Mandel(Netanya, Israel/Eldad HS), senior Alex Vanderkaay(Rochester, Mich./Adams HS), Curtis Dauw and sophomore Charlie Houchin(Raleigh, N.C./William G. Enloe HS) touched the wall third with an NCAA Consideration 'B' time of 3:20.94.
Junior Matt Patton(Matthews, N.C./Butler HS) continued with Michigan's dominance in freestyle events, touching the wall first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:21.28.
Andr Schultz led the maize to a sweep in the 200-yard individual medley touching in at 1:48.53, followed by Vanderkaay second (1:49.97) and freshman Tyler Clary(Riverside, Calif./Poly HS) third (1:51.35).
The double-dual meet continues Saturday (Nov. 17) at the Norris Aquatics Center, Evanston, Ill. Action begins at 10 a.m.
