
Patton Leads Michigan to Day-One Lead at Husky Invite

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- The No. 4 University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team dominated the first day of action at the Husky Invitational Thursday (Nov. 29), scoring 461.5 points to take first place in the 10-team field in the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center. Seven U-M swimmers in two events earned NCAA qualifying times.
The Wolverines began the competition with a dazzling performance from junior Matt Patton(Matthews, N.C./Butler HS), who led the Wolverines to a clean sweep in the 500-yard freestyle with an NCAA standard time of 4:16.23. Freshman Tyler Clary(Riverside, Calif./Poly HS) and senior Alex Vanderkaay(Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) finished second and third in the event with NCAA consideration times of 4:20.86 and 4:25.39, respectively.
Junior Sal Barba(Hudson, Mass./St. Johns HS) kept pace with Clary and Vanderkaay, posting a NCAA 'B' time of 4:25.98.
Patton helped three more Wolverines to NCAA qualifying times in the 400-yard Medley relay, as Patton, sophomore Scott Spann(Austin, Texas/Westlake HS), sophomore Chris Brady(Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant HS) and junior Bobby Savulich(Edison, N.J./Saint Joseph) finished second in the event with a 'B' time of 3:15.09.
U-M returns to the pool Friday (Nov. 30) for day two of the Husky Invitational. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. PST, with the finals races beginning at 6 p.m. PST.
