ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team had its 12-game winning streak snapped by the Ohio State Buckeyes, 3-2, Friday night (Nov. 30) in Yost Arena. Despite two goals from alternate captain Chad Kolarik(Abington, Pa.) in the last three minutes of play, Michigan could not pull through with a victory.
Despite outshooting the Buckeyes 30-16, including a 15-5 margin in the third period, U-M fell short in its comeback bid. OSU's Tommy Goebel scored a short-handed goal in the first frame and a power-play marker in the third stanza to give the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead for the majority of the game. Kolarik scored with 2:41 left in the game to cut the deficit to 2-1, but OSU retaliated just 32 seconds later. Kolarik's second goal came with 1:18 left, but the Wolverines could not beat OSU goalie Joe Palmer in the final minute.
Thanks to an early power play, the Wolverines had outshot the Buckeyes 6-1, but Michigan was unable to capitalize on any of its opportunities.
Ohio State got the upper-hand though as U-M took penalties at 9:48 and 10:15, giving the Buckeyes a five-on-three advantage. OSU took four shots on goal during its power-play, but Billy Sauer(Walworth, N.Y.) and the Wolverine penalty-killing squad was able to defend their goal.
The Wolverine triumph would not be long celebrated, however, as a Buckeye short-handed goal gave OSU a 1-0 lead at 15:28 in the opening frame. The tally was scored by right-winger Tommy Goebel on a partial breakaway. Sauer got a piece of Goebel's low shot, but the puck deflected off Sauer's pads and trickled into the net. The goal was the first short-handed marker allowed by the Maize and Blue this season.
The Goebel goal was the only score of the first period from either team. The Wolverines outshot the Buckeyes 9-6 at the close of the frame, but the scoreboard read in OSU's favor.
At 8:54 in the middle stanza, Sauer and Mark Mitera(Livonia, Mich.) each made excellent saves, prohibiting Ohio State from putting any more tallies on the board. Ohio State defender Chris Reed tried to put a shot past Sauer, but the goalie sprawled out across the ice and deflected the disc. Sergio Somma scooped up the deflection and faced an empty net, but Mitera's stick made the save at the goal line.
At the close of the second stanza, U-M was still outshooting OSU 15-11, but the visitors carried the majority of the momentum going into the third period.
The Buckeyes doubled their goal total at 2:33 in the last frame when Goebel scored an unassisted power-play tally. The forward skated around the back of Michigan's net and scooped up a loose puck. Goebel carried the disc to the right post and slid it past Sauer. Goebel's second goal of the evening extended Ohio State's lead to 2-0.
Michigan would not be shut out. A goal from Kolarik at 17:19 put the Wolverines on the board, cutting it to 2-1. The Ohio State goaltender attempted to clear the puck from behind the net. Fortunately for U-M, Kolarik pushed the puck right to Kevin Porter(Northville, Mich.), who made a quick dish to Max Pacioretty(New Canaan, Conn.) at in the middle of the left face-off circle. The left-winger spotted Kolarik at the crease and moved the puck his way. Kolarik was able to push it into the net and give the Maize and Blue its first score of the evening.
Ohio State did not let down though, responding to Kolarik's tally a mere 32 seconds later at 17:51. Somma tallied the Buckeye score, increasing their lead 3-1.
Kolarik pulled Michigan back within one, 3-2, at 18:42. Tristin Llewellyn(Ann Arbor, Mich.) passed the puck to Chris Summers(Milan, Mich.), who was skating in the neutral zone. Summers dished it to Kolarik at the high slot, and the right-winger flicked into the Ohio State goal.
The Maize and Blue pulled Sauer for an extra skater in the final minute but -- despite the change and Kolarik's last-ditch efforts -- U-M could not solve Palmer.
Michigan and Ohio State meet again Saturday night (Dec. 1) in Yost Ice Arena. Faceoff is set for 7:35 p.m., and Comcast Local will televise the game.
