
Wolverines Close First Half with Win at EMU Invite

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Holding a lead from the first splash to the last touch, the University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team cruised to a first-place finish at the Eastern Michigan Invitational at Jones Natatorium on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 30-Dec. 1). Michigan's 1,147.5 points bested Eastern Michigan's 920.5 points for the win. The Wolverines swept the diving events and came within two races of winning every event.
Senior Elyse Lee(Albion, Mich./Albion) continued her dominance off the springboard, taking both events of the weekend. On the one-meter board, Lee scored 288.50 after she posted 311.70 points in the three-meter event. Both scores are NCAA Zone qualifiers.
Sophomore Margaret Kelly(Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and junior Payton Johnson(Champaign, Ill./Centennial) each scored a pair of NCAA consideration times. Kelly got her first cut in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing ahead of the pack with a 50.86 time. Her second consideration time came in her second of three wins when she touched the wall in 4:20.55 to win the 400-yard individual medley. For Johnson, wins in the 100- (55.08) and 200-yard butterfly (1:59.87) secured her a pair of NCAA 'B' times.
Junior Hannah Smith(Dexter, Mich./Dexter), also a three event winner, used her first trip in the pool to grab a consideration time, clocking in at 1:58.56 in the 200-yard backstroke. She also took home wins in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley.
Other Wolverine winners included senior Justine Mueller(Monroe, Mich./Monroe) in the mile (17:03.84) and 100-yard backstroke (57.89), sophomore Emily Hanson(Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) in the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.22) and fifth-year senior Melissa Jaeger(Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.22). Michigan also took three of four relays, winning the 400- and 800-yard freestyle relays and the 400-yard medley relay.
Michigan will return to the pool following the semester break in South Bend, Ind., for the Notre Dame Invitational Jan. 11-12.
