ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan head field hockey coach Nancy Cox announced Wednesday (Dec. 12) that juniors Stephanie Hoyer(Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS), Michaela McDermott(Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights HS) and Sarah Wilhite(Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey HS) have been voted tri-captains by their teammates to lead the Wolverines next fall during the 2008 campaign.
"These three young women will do a tremendous job in their leadership roles," said Cox. "We have made this appointment several months earlier than in the past, and it will be a paradigm shift from previous years, giving this new leadership the opportunity to begin the management and facilitation process of the group and get us off on the right foot for 2008.
Hoyer, a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and NFHCA All-Academic team member, has listed among the Wolverines' annual scoring leaders in each of her collegiate seasons and, in 2007, tallied a career-high seven goals and three assists. She has appeared in every Michigan game since her arrival in Ann Arbor and started all 23 games in 2007 as a primary fixture of the Wolverine forward line.
McDermott, as a primary member of the Michigan penalty-corner unit, registered career highs in assists (9) and points (9) in 2007 and started each of the Wolverines' 23 contests. She has appeared in 58 career games as a member of the U-M backfield and, as such to 11 shutouts over the span, including five in 2007.
Wilhite, a three-year mainstay in the Wolverine backfield, will round out Michigan's 2008 tri-captain leadership. Wilhite has started all but nine games -- which came as result of a freshman-year injury -- during her tenure at Michigan, and, in 2007, helped limit opponent shots to 116 in the second half. She tallied one goal and three assists during the most recent season -- all coming in the final three weeks of the season.
Michigan (16-7, 6-0 Big Ten) concluded the 2007 campaign with its eighth NCAA Tournament appearance in nine seasons. The Wolverines were also regular-season tri-champions in the Big Ten, marking their sixth title in the last nine years, and U-M advanced to the Big Ten Tournament final for the ninth time in program history.
