Wolverines Win Five Events At EMU Open

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- A portion of the 15th-ranked University of Michigan men's track and field team earned victories in five events at the EMU Open held at the Bob Parks Track. The meet was held on a 200-meter flat track. The rest of team competed at the Tyson Invitational (Feb. 9-10) at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark.
The Wolverines dominated the relay events, winning the distance medley relay and placing three 4x400-meter relay teams in the top 10 spots, including the winning squad. Michigan also sent a 4x400-meter relay team to the Tyson Invitational that placed third.
Sophomore Adam Harris (Wheaton, Ill./North) won the 60-meter dash, clocking 6.80. Rounding out the top-five was junior Shakir Edwards (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) in third (6.96) and sophomore Brandon Harrison (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) in fifth (6.99, 6.986 prelim time).
In the 800-meter run, the Wolverines where led by senior John D'Arcy (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont). D'Arcy won the event, crossing the line in 1:53.42. Sophomore Justin Switzer (Waterford, Mich./Kettering) was not far behind in sixth place (1:55.35).
Freshman Frank Shotwell (Medina, Ohio/Medina) and sophomore Rob Fiorillo (Holly, Mich./Holly) each placed in the top three spots of the 60-meter hurdles. Shotwell won the event, clocking 8.18, while Fiorillo placed third with a time of 8.28.
Four Wolverines held the top-nine spots in the weight throw. Senior Chris McHugh (Bonita Springs, Fla./Bishop Hendricken) placed fourth (54-9 1/2), sophomore Brendan Lodge (Narragansett, N.J./Bishop Hendricken) took fifth (54-4), junior/sophomore Dan Bedoya (Muskegon, Mich./Reeths-Puffer) finished sixth (53-10 1/2) and sophomore/freshman Vince Belitsos (Leonard, Mich./Oxford) placed ninth (49-5 3/4). Belitsos also took fourth in the shot put with a mark of 49-9.
In addition to Shotwell and Belitsos, many other Wolverine freshmen enjoyed very strong performances. Kyle Terpak (Riverview, Mich./Riverview) took seventh in the 200-meter dash (22.95), Ricky Fleming (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) placed eighth in the 400-meter dash (50.33) and Ciaran O'Lionaird (Cork, Ireland/De La Salle) finished ninth in the mile (4:13.25) cord of 49-9.
Next week, Michigan will host the Harold Silverston Invitational at the U-M Indoor Track Building in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Saturday (Feb. 17). The event will be held on a 200-meter flat track; field events are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and track events will begin at noon.
