Wolverines Take Fourth at Pacific Coast Classic

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The No. 1-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team took fourth place at the 2007 Pacific Coast Classic on Saturday (Feb. 24) with a total of 214.400 at the Oakland Convention Center. For the second year in a row, Oklahoma finished first (218.450), while Stanford took second (216.650) and California finished third (214.750).
The Maize and Blue tallied six top-five finishes in four different events. On the floor exercise, two Wolverines finished in the top-five. Sophomore Scott Bregman (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State HS) earned the best finish for Michigan, taking fourth place with a score of 9.500; sophomore Kent Caldwell (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin HS) tied for fifth, grabbing a 9.400 for his routine.
On the pommel horse, fifth-year senior co-captain Justin Laury (Marietta, Ga./McEachern HS) notched U-M's best finish, taking 14th with a score of 8.400.
Sophomore Ralph Rosso (Morganville, N.J./St. John Vianney HS) and senior/junior co-captain Andrew Elkind (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East HS) paced the Wolverines on the rings, tying for seventh place with scores of 9.400 apiece.
Bregman was the lone U-M competitor to finish in the top-five on the vault, tying for fifth place tying his career-best score of 8.950. Sophomore Jamie Thompson (Lakemont, Ga./Oconee County HS) finished tied for eighth, scoring a season-best of 8.850 to better his previous record by 0.100.
On the parallel bars, Elkind tied for fifth place with a score of 9.250. Laury was the second-highest Wolverine, tying for 12th place (8.950).
The Maize and Blue closed out the meet with two top-five performances from Elkind and senior Aaron Rakes (Lexington, Ky./Dunbar HS). Elkind and Rakes tied for fifth place with scores of 9.350. Junior Daniel Rais (Livonia, Mich./Franklin HS) and sophomore Joe Catrambone (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic HS) finished in the top 15. Rais placed 14th (9.050); Catrambone came in 15th (9.000).
The Wolverines continue action in California, taking on Stanford at Burnham Pavilion in Palo Alto on Saturday (March 3). The meet begins at 7 p.m. PST.
