FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- After the final day of the NCAA Indoor Championships, the University of Michigan women's track and field team finished in ninth place with a total of 21 points Saturday (March 10) at Arkansas' Randal Tyson Sports Center. The Wolverines were led by four All-America performances, in the mile, 800- and 3,000-meter runs, and pentathlon.
In the mile, sophomore Nicole Edwards (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey) took third place with a time of 4:44.89 to earn her second individual All-America honor, giving Michigan six points. Edwards is Michigan's second miler to earn back-to-back All-America honors, joining Lindsey Gallo (2004, '05).
Fifth-year senior co-captain Katie Erdman (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) also earned All-America honors, finishing fourth in the 800m to give U-M five points. The Wolverine co-captain crossed the finish line with a time of 2:05.53 -- 2.06 seconds behind first-place finisher Alysia Johnson of California. This has been Erdman's third year scoring in the 800m at the meet, coming in third in 2004 and seventh in 2006.
In the pentathlon, sophomore co-captain Bettie Wade (Northville, Mich./Farmington HS) became Michigan's second All-American in the event in program history after Jennifer Williams (2002-06) accomplished the feat in 2006. Wade tallied her second-highest point total of her career (4,131), which is 50 points short of her career-best. In the 60m hurdles, the sophomore co-captain set a new personal-best, crossing the line in 8.56 seconds to garner the fourth-quickest time. Wade's best finish of the evening came in the pentathlon long jump, earning 822 points with a third-place distance of 19-4 3/4.
Senior Erin Webster (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child HS) rounded out the Wolverine honors, as she earned All-America in the 3,000m run with a ninth-place finishing time of 9:20.50. Despite being 0.38 seconds short of earning points for U-M, this year's 3,000m Big Ten Indoor Champion earned All-America honors after finishing in the top eight. Webster earned her first-ever All-America honor in the indoor 3,000m.
The Maize and Blue will have a two-week hiatus before heading to Tempe, Ariz., to compete in the Arizona State Invitational on Friday and Saturday, March 23-24, at Sun Angel Stadium's Joe Selleh Track.
