Wolverines Close Lady Gator with 12th Place Showing

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -C The University of Michigan women's golf team closed the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational with a 12th-place team finish Sunday (March 11), posting a 938 54-hole tournament score at the University of Florida Golf Course. The Wolverines opened with team totals of 309 and 304 in Saturday's 36-holes and sat in 11th place, but closed with a 325 in the final round to fall one spot in the final standings.
For the first time in her career, freshman Ashley Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) led the Wolverines, tying for 37th with a 230 54-hole total. After opening with a 76, Bauer fired a team-tournament-best 74 in the second round to put her in 27th after the first day. A final round 80 dropped her 10 spots as she closed with a 230 total for the top-40 finish.
Fellow-freshman Andrea Ratigan (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino HS) also finished the first day of play tied for 27th after back-to-back rounds of 75, giving her an 150 36-hole total. In the final hole, Ratigan found trouble and could not recover, posting an 87 to drop to a 237 tournament total and a tie for 60th individually.
After opening with an 83 in the first round, senior Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS) was the only Wolverine to descend her tournament rounds; she carded a 79 in the second round and closed with a 78, giving her a 240 tournament total and a tie for 66th place finish. Other Wolverines finishes included: senior Ali Stinson (Penticton, British Columbia/Penticton Secondary), tie for 70th with a 241 total (85-76-70) and junior Lindsay Davis (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) tie for 81st with a 247 total (75-81-91).
Sophomore Lydia Bentez Coln (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Pendleton School) competed as an individual and tied for 45th with a career-best 54-hole tournament total. After opening with a career-best with a 75 in the first round, she lowered it by a stroke with a new career-best round total of 74 in the second round. She closed with an 84, giving her a 233 total and a top-50 finish.
Overall, host Florida led from start to finish, as the Gators closed with a 14-shot win with an 876 54-hole total (293-292-291). TCU (297-291-302) was the runner-up at 890, with Michigan State (301-288-303) closing in third at 892. In addition to the team title, Florida's Sandra Gal came away with medalist honors with an even-par 210 tally (69-70-71). TCU's Catherine Matranga was the runner-up at 215 (71-70-74), while Florida State's Caroline Westrup was third at 216 (72-77-67)
After two straight tournament weekends, the Maize and Blue will not see tournament action for two weeks. The Wolverines head to Tucson, Ariz., Saturday and Sunday, March 24-25, for the Mountain View Challenge. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Mountain View Golf Club.

Lydia Bentez Coln second round 74 at the Lady Gator Invitational was a single round career best tally. It topped the 75 she had in the opening round, which bested her original pre-tournament career-best of 76 C fired in the final round of the 2006 Rio Verde Collegiate (March 2-4).

By playing in the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational, Brianna Broderick and Ali Stinson played in their 43rd straight tournaments for U-M. Broderick and Stinson have yet to miss a tournament in their entire career. In fact, the duo has started in all 43 of those tournaments. Former Wolverine Laura Olin holds the U-M record for consecutive tournaments, playing in 50 straight during her career.
